Hey all,

Sorry for the general thread, but I’m hoping to get some feedback on the 2006 Beetle. My wife found a listing for one today with 185k miles for $3000. She’s interested in checking it out and maybe getting it as a daily commuter to save money from driving the van around. Also, our oldest son will start driving in about three years, so maybe that could be his first car.

I was wondering if anyone had feedback about this car. Specifically, are there any common issues or problems I should know about or look for. We currently have a 2013 Sportwagen TDI, and we previously had a 2005 B5 wagon TDI that we got rid of for the van. The B5 had the fuel pump assembly issue, so I’m trying to ascertain if there are any such things to watch out for with the Beetle.

Thanks for the feedback!

Sorry, I meant B5.5 Passat wagon; not B5.

Manual or automatic? We have an auto with about 50k miles on the clock. It’s the BEW engine and consistently gets 40mpg. We have had zero issues with the car.
I guess for us the weak points would be the dsg flywheel and perhaps the cam on the BEW engine over the long haul. It’s been a solid car so far. We have owned it for 8 years when we acquired it with only 6030 miles on the clock.

It’s a manual transmission. We’re gonna test drive it tomorrow to see how it is. I just wanted to see if anyone had any feedback about issues (engine; EGR; nozzles; etc) with that era Beetle.

Bad service, expensive repairs, they're pretty simple, but different. Some have had cam issues, not usually a problem if the right oil was used over the life of the car.
Test drive it, get it warm then run it hard. Buy it, the NB is their best platform and some of the colors are lovely.

So, I drove the car yesterday, and it drives well. The leatherette is coming undone from the door panel, but that’s cosmetic and can be fixed.

There was a whooshing sound on startup, so maybe someone could weigh in on that. Possibly turbo leak? It didn’t seem to affect driving or performance.

My '05 Golf runs well, but electrical problems are becoming a nuisance. Aged wiring I presume. More specifically, the alarm system; and door ajar light is constantly on. I have VCDS, but still stumped.
