Alright I am ready to loose it! We bought my wife a 2006.6 BRM with a 5 speed for her to commute 187 miles a day, with first 150k not a single problem!

153k flywheel starts making noise and I check the cam and low an behold there are signs for copper so I bite the bullet invest the money and do the work myself. So the car now has a Colt cam, SMF southbend kit and all the Frank06 Mods (Thanks again Frank, awsome guy please buy from him!)

Now 160k wife drives home from work all is good, runs a few errands and notices all of the sudden on deceleration there is a groaning/grinding noise in all forward gears.

Pull the drain plug out of the tranny and guts START FALLING OUT!

***, I have owned about 30 vw's and beat the hell out of all of them and never had a tranny break except for one of the 84 GTI rivot failures.
This one has been babied and it fails, the only thing I can come up with is we have studded snows is there to much traction and it popped the differential?

What broke? Reasearch shows its a JCR do I have any options for a different year tranny code ect?

Help please!!!!

Thanks in advance

If you know of a Tranny for a good price within 400miles of Maine let me know I will drive down and get it this weekend!

Sorry to hear about your troubles. But this is a good time to do a 6 speed swap. What ever you do make sure you add and/or check fluid level before operation.

I hope redline does not kill my box, its got a quaife diff so would be an expensive mistake!

This is unfortunate.

Unless there is a shifting issue, why change from a VW-spec tranny oil? The manual transmissions almost always outlive the car...

Yeah we thought we were safe with a Manual box also, as far a shift issue she would have blown it up long ago and there was no metal at 153k.

Oh and I changed because VW wasn't open on Sat and I "read on the internet" that Redline was good stuff!

I doubt if the oil is at fault. I've had Redline in mine ever since the 5th gear swap at about 13,000 km, and it has 305,000 on it now. I know lots of other people have used it, too.

Only a disassembly of the box would indicate what really happened.

I just looked at the pieces that fell out the drain hole, 2 or the pieces are bearing rollers about 1/4 long.

Since I also have a 2006 BRM, I had spoken to my dealer about this a year ago after hearing a friend having this problem and they told me that they did see only a few BRMs having differential problems (bearings) at the beginning (2006). Unfortunately I can't find the info but words came out from my trusted dealer and it wasn't an oil spec. Also you did say that you filled it through the reverse switch hole GOOD. We all know that if you use the fill hole on the tranny, you won't have enough oil for the 5th gear.

Good luck

Well I ended up finding and buying a New Old Stock 06 GQQ hopefully there will not be any problems with it. I figured I fixed the SMF and Cam so this is the third problem and they happen in threes right.

Same three things I fixed on my 05.5 (all at the same time).

Be sure to change the transmission fluid on your new (used) GQQ. Use only OEM VW fluid. Don't use Redline (or Royal purple?) or anything other since OEM stuff works the best (search Fuels and Lubricants section for post 'Stick with G52 in your tranny' or similar name).

I have been running Redline MTL in mine for about 4 months. Shifting has been getting "notchy-er" by the day into every gear except fifth. Gonna go back to G70 soon.

New tranny is in, anyone who needs parts should be sure to contact

Denon Performance formaly Ron's Parts from back in the day
1 (888) 468-0688, or if busy, please try: 1 (604) 464-4401

Drained the fluid and from the factory it only had 1.4l just like the TSB

Refilled with the correct amount and all seems good!!!

I will never use Redline Again!

And tell your friends no to do this. Also the same with Royal purple. Those fluids were not designed/tested with VW transmissions. One fits all does not exist in this world. Each application has got it's own maintenance recomendations.
