Apparently case is broken and a shaft. I only had the car couple weeks. 1200km and trans blew. Got it towed home 300 kms and now looking for options
It's basically stock besides a tune w intake and exhaust.
I bought a SB clutch already now looking for a used trans
Having a tough time. Finding anything. Mostly all high kms
What do I do?
The main guy I've talked to has one from an ALH and said it should match up but I might have to cut a counter weight or something and the gears don't match exactly

The ALH 02J will bolt right onto your BEW block without issue. Just make sure it has 2000 and later style shifter cables, they are better.

That's right, don't buy a transmission with a black shifter counterweight. It won't work with your cables and shifter box inside the car. Any transmission from a later ALH (silver counterweight) will be OK.

Hi, thanks guys.
The same guy found a 2006 MKV Jetta and said that trans should bolt up. I didn't think they'd also be interchangeable. It's a little more expensive but much less km. Any experience with MK5 mk4 swapping parts?

Mk5 transmission will NOT work on your BEW...

And... you'd need to get a retune, otherwise cruise control won't work. Some of the gear ratios are a little taller in the BEW's 02J, namely 5th. The ALH is 0.756, and the BEW is 0.744.

I respectfully disagree. I personally installed a ALH trans into a BEW wagon without issue and cruise worked just fine. Car was bone stock, no tune.

The only ratio that's different on the BEW is 5th. And I've had both ALH and BEW transmissions in my Wagon, no re-tune required.

Well that's not great.. I almost ordered it from them yesterday but didn't have my wallet.
The guy said since mine is an 05 but mk4 just the body is different but still a 1.9l it would fit.. but yea thinking about it probably wouldn't even be same mounting points and fit. It was off an 06 jetta

You also have an ALH wagon.

I, too, have had BEW EUH code transmissions in my ALH. In fact, I'll have another one in DSOL in the next few weeks, because that's what I took to Pierce Family Automotive when I had him install my Wavetrac LSD.

Yeah, not even close.

Where it gets more confusing is that the mk4 stuff technically extended into 2005, but via the BEW. BHW and BRM aren't compatible platforms.

Glad you didn't buy it though. No need to blow money on something that wouldn't work.

Right so.. to confirm, I have a BEW and a EUH 02J currently
Any ALH manual should fit or a bew if it's from an Mk4?
You have a BEW with a EUH 02J.
You can use an 02J EGR or EUH code. Do NOT use one from a gas engine, the gear ratios are completely different.

can my 1996 VW rhialta transmission out of my motorhome interchange with either a 2001 passat or 2004 passat transmission?

Is there an option to get a gas one and put gears in it? I gotta drop my trans and have a look in it
You could but it is MUCH more cost effective to buy a good used correct ratio gearbox. Have you contacted Frans in the Netherlands here yet? Or maybe someone here parting a car is willing to ship a gearbox... Don't give up hope yet!

You *can* use a Mk5 or newer transmission in a later Mk4, but you would need to hack the cluster to pick up vehicle speed via CAN bus for it to work, because none of those transmissions have any provision for a vehicle speed sensor. And this hacking is not something VCDS can do, you'd have to find something that allows you to change individual bytes in the EEPROM of the cluster.

A member here created one such tool for free to use, kw1281test. Need a VAG KKL cable, which can be had for cheap, and understand how to use your command prompt to operate the program. There are many others out there as well, some that cost money...

But, I would argue if you're going to go that route, there are better options. Later 1.8 TSI cars in the late Mk6 and into the first half of the Mk7 era use a 5 speed that's geared even taller than the BRM Jetta. Then you get to the 2019 and newer Golf/Jetta 1.4 TSI, and it's a 02S 6 speed with really nice tall gearing that's even better still. And you still can use all your original 5 speed parts except the bracket that secures the shift cables to the top of the transmission. You would need to swap that out for the Mk5 version.
