Maybe I'm missing the obvious here, but, it's a USED car!!! It won't be showroom perfect.....
Of course it is a used car. The seller believes it is worth $5(k). Alot of people (such as yourself), want to argue that the seller is wrong in the seller's estimation of their price without offering any facts to support your position. Maybe what you believe by itself is your reality. Sadly, the world does not subscribe to such constructs.

So, if you want to offer nothing to support your opinion, that is fine. That seems to be the norm for some these days. I pointed out what I saw in the pictures and noted I could be wrong of what I saw. I also noted that the seller has not offered any maintenance history, a vin or much of anything else. I believe a thorough inspection and a review of the history of this car is in order before dropping a large amount of money on this type of item. But again, that is me. I don't have a bunch of money to throw around like some of you rich folks out there ................

So I graduated university a long time ago, but I bought some new batteries at the drug store for the TI-85. So...............I did the math...

Asking Price of Wagon: $5,000
non-stock wheels deduct: -$500
glazed headlights deduct: -$750
Lack of ESP deduct: -$600
Chinese Tires deduct: -$1000
Shifts like a car with 280k miles deduct: -$2500

So my magic TI-85 says the correct price is………….the seller owes you $350!!!!! Seems like a fair deal. Minus negotiation, of course, for the lack of records.

…..If I were you: call the seller mention these mathematical concerns and make sure he has the title and a checkbook…..
Not a fair criticism of my postings, but after-all, you are a used car salesman offering what appears to be a goberment numbers analysis, so I should not be surprised. Since you are in the business of buying and selling used cars, I would suggest that you immediately send them a certified check and buy the car sight unseen and let us know how it turns out. You see, it is one thing to shoot your mouth off, it is another to put your money where it is. If your assessment is correct, and pursuant to the musings of most on this thread, you will secure a nice profit --- which is what you are in business to do.

As for me, I offered a cautious approach. With the statements provided by the seller, I am not in a position to disagree with the seller's asking price of $5(k). I start from the position that $5(k) for a 10 model year old car with over 280(k) miles for a mk4 tdi seems about right. Before buying the car, I would have to personally inspect it and would want to know the maintenance history of the car. I would also do a vin history check. I believe in due diligence, not irrational excitement. But again, I am not in the used car business that needs such irrational excitement. Btw, I am surprised you didn't link your classified ad for the JSW you are selling (or did it sell)? In any event, I recognize that caution may mean that someone utilizing such irrational excitement may buy it first. Some of us like to look before they jump. I do not have a horse in this race so too speak. Good luck.

Maybe this one is better:

Oh wait! The steering wheel has some wear, better do a price drop.
I think most people would agree that a car with 115(k) miles is worth more then a car with 280(k) miles and therefore would justify a higher asking price everything else being equal. As for your other commentary, I believe it is reflective of some of the other posters who have a deep emotional attachment to this subject. In any event, used cars are used. They have flaws. That is fine. The value should be determined by the buyer based on a proper inspection and history of the vehicle, not one's construct of reality......

Arnie - You're the only one here that keeps insisting that someone should send this guy money and buy the car sight unseen.

And to quote myself...

Fix Until Broke said:
As with any used car, buyer beware, and you should obviously look at it, talk to the seller and see if anything smells funny (literally and figuretively). Even at $5k you could put some money in it and still not overpay. Let's say worst case it needs a turbo, flywheel, nozzles and timing belt in the first year. So now you have $8000 in it, still a good deal and will run a long time after that or you can sell it for that with the new parts.

From the information in the ad and what we collectively know about these vehicles, this one looks like a good deal compared to others. Go find a better deal on a MKIV TDI Wagon.
You're the one making a big deal about this - we're just egging you on :)

Local to me 03 TDI Jetta Wagon 5 Speed 85k original miles sold in 36 hours about 8 weeks ago for $12k...

In my opinion, this one is a steal for $5k, even with high miles. I passed the ad on to a few people who I know are looking for TDI's.
Dito, I think it is a steal at $5k........I'd be surprised if it still available for that low price.

That is a great deal with the low miles and nice leather interior. Won't last long.

And the high mileage one that the OP posted for $5k is a nice deal too as long as it doesn't need anything major.

I just with I could go back in time to 2003 and buy a brand new one! I'd pay sticker price and be overjoyed.

Arnie:

My post was just a joke. I figured you would take it as such...but I do have to make one final correction to your last post.

"used car salesman offering what appears to be a goberment numbers analysis"

I am a "used car salesman offering what appears to be a goberment numbers analysis" with a TI-85 Calculator with new batteries!!!

((You should take this as a joke as well))

Hope you have a great Christmas anyway.

ESP $100 for the parts on this car???

Fix til Broke,

After your $100 for ESP parts comment I did a quick search on the forum. I found one DIYer who said in 2004 that he was into it for $650 at the junk yard and another who priced new parts at ~$1600 back then. I won't bother looking for ESP in a car if I can do it for $100. Have used parts become that much more plentiful in the last ~8 years to bring the price down like that? I am not sarcastic, I really want to know?

I am one of those that wants ESP. It just seems like a great safety thing when the S*** hits the fan and you or your wife are too slow or to fatigued to react. I am constantly amazed at what safety ABS adds to driving on snow but I have no experience with ESP and am a newbie to boot. But if you can turn it off at will, why not?

Can you really get all required ESP parts for around $100 at a junk yard?

Thank you

Eric

Until '05 ('06 in Canada) Jetta Wagons were just that, Jetta Wagons. When the MKV wagon was introduced in '08 (I think, '09 for the TDI) it was re-named the Jetta Sportwagen. I know it's a nit, but I like to be accurate.

I seem to remember that you could get the parts for $75-100

It was in the context of limited slip for MKIV's and how when put together it made for a very good performing vehicle in limited traction conditions.

Maybe I'm getting my acronyms mixed up?

I called the number and looked up the vin.

Car was from kansas city, mo.

Carfax did not have much info on the car last info was for 120k in 2007 it only showed some oil changes and registration. The seller has NO RECORDS on the car and is not the original owner! I think 5k is on the high side for this wagon!

Say you put in a new long block and some other parts then your back at $8k+ doing the work your self and the OD still is showing 280k!

The listing went up a week ago. If it was really a bargain it would have been gone in hours.
