Hi TDIClubbers,

Long time no post, sorry... been busy with life and such...

We swapped a NEW old stock 6-speed manual transmission into my son's 2002 Jetta TDI and it has been working great. But lately it seems to be loosing prime and if it sits at all he has to crack open an injector line to get the air out and get it to refire... and he drives a company car so his TDI only gets driven a few times a week at most now.

Anyhow, he is looking into getting something newer and has actually put a deposit down on a 2015 BMW 328d Wagon MSport XDrive so I wanted to check and see I someone might be interested in buying his 2002...

It has around 260,000 miles on the chassis and engine and somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 miles on the transmission and clutch. The interior is as expected with a car of this age and mileage with saggy headliner with pins/staples holding it up, seats dirty and rough with seat covers installed at the same time as the transmission swap. The paint is as expected with peeling of the clear in many spots and some rust in expected locations. Car also has the DieselGeek skidplate with FMJ side skirts installed and we did the timing belt not that long ago, but I can't recall the mileage... Tires only have a few thousand miles on them and he powder coated the wheels a gunmetal color and they look great!

Let me know if anyone has any interest and what you guys think would be a fair selling price in as in condition. I suspect that the fuel filter "T" or O-ring is the cause of loosing prime and my son may change the filter and "T" soon, but as of now it does not start easily.

The car has a clean Tennessee title but it has had a couple accidents that were professionally repaired and repainted. One was a side impact, the other was an encounter with a deer.

It also has an HID headlight conversion with projectors installed in factory housings with glass lenses. I can't remember the TDIClub member that did the conversions, but he doesnt do them anymore, anyhow they are great and SOOOOO much better than stock!!!

I'll have him send me some current pics to post here soon.

Thanks and have a great day everyone!!!

Here is some info on maintenance on the car...

VW Mk4 Jetta TDI

New tires 258000 Michelin tires, I can't remember the model...
front back rotation 264,000

Auto to manual swap 240,246

Oil change/cabin and air filters 260,000

Current mileage around 264,000 will get exact mileage soon...

It has Koni orange shocks and struts front and rear, but the front left strut seems to have a bad seal and needs to be replaced. I believe Koni has a lifetime warranty but I am not positive. Still has stock sprints and stock ride height front and rear.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I might have to email or text pics... I can't seem to paste them here...

Hi,

We haven't set a price yet as he is gonna change the fuel filter and see if it quits loosing prime and acts normal again...

I'll update once we know whether it is running normally again or not and we will price it accordingly.

If you want to make an offer on it now feel free to let me know via pm...

Thanks

Sorry, I live in Tennessee. It is my son's car and it is in NY state.

It is the emerald green (blue/greenish not the Forrest green) with beige interior. The seat covers are black/gray and the wheels are powder coated a gloss gunmetal gray (called "Cadillac Gray" by the wheel place he works at).

We got the car for him around 2014 if i remember correctly and the automatic surprisingly lasted until 2022 when we swapped it for the 6-speed manual transmission. That bumped the highway mpg from upper 30s to 54 on thw highway!!!! With an average of around 42 mpg city/highway combined driving.

He has ordered the fuel filter and I will update once it is swapped and hopefully running great again!

Thanks for asking and have a great day, if you need any more info let me know

It also has EBC dimpled and slotted rotors front and rear, the front pads have been replaced with AutoZone pads and the rears are still EBC RedStuff pads...

How Much?
We haven't set a price yet as we are hoping to get her running well again with the fuel filter replacement.

After replacing the fuel filter will decide on a price if it is a good running 6-speed ALH TDI it will be one price and if it is not running well after the filter replacement it will be for a lower price so someone else can figure out the problem and get it going again, or use it for a project car or ?????

It would make a great Smyth Ute or even better the Smyth coupe, but I'm not sure if they still make that kit????

Feel free to make an offer for it as it sits if you want.

Take care and have a great night!

Sorry, didn't mean to offend anyone... if you notice in my original post I asked for suggestions on price from the TDIClub community, but no suggestions private or public so far... also, I clearly mentioned "feeler" in the headline... again sorry if I offended someone.

This is a 6-speed swapped car with a NOS VW transmission with around 20,000 miles on it. Seems to me like even at 26X,XXX miles that it would be a great commuter or project car for someone...

The new fuel filter arrived today and he is planning on replacing it this afternoon. I'll talk with him seriously about a sales price once he's done wrenching...

Have a great day!!!

i'm in CT and will be heading west on 84 Saturday evening, if it's driving by then i'd take a look. I'll be back in november and would be needing a new mk4 so around the 4k mark isn't a bad idea depending on mods and condition

I'll see if my son is available Saturday evening. He is in Newburgh, NY 12550 if that is close to where you will be. Let me know if you are wanting to get together to check it out. Would you be thinking of buying it now or in November?

GOOD NEWS!

He changed fuel filter this afternoon and after priming the high pressure pump and getting the air out of the lines it fired right up! He drove it around town and stopped and restarted the engine several times and it was working just like it used to so we are assuming that one of the o-rings was allowing air into the system causing it to loose its prime. I told him to park it and come back to it tomorrow afternoon to make sure it is holding prime for an extended period of time again.

I'll post an update tomorrow after I hear back from him.

To put the car's info in one place:

As far as I can recall...

26X,XXX miles on the engine and chassis
11mm high pressure fuel pump, O-ring and maybe whole pump was replaced a few years ago by Kraiger
Alternator replaced about 20,000 miles ago
AC compressor replaced about 20,000 miles ago
Radiator fans replaced about 20,000 miles ago
New Michelin tires installed recently on powder coated gloss Cadillac Gray factory wheels
Panzer skid plate with FMJ side skirts installed
Koni Orange shocks and struts installed front and rear, (but driver strut seems to have blown seal or seals)
Kenwood Excellon head unit
Working cup holder!
6-speed manual transmission swap 2 years ago with New Old Stock VW transmission, new clutch and rest of VW conversion parts imported from Belgium (I can't remember the user's name, but we got in touch with him here on TDIClub)
Blend door foam repaired 2 years ago so heat and AC work great now
Aftermarket black and gray seat covers covering old original beige seats
Saggy headliner tacked up
NO sunroof, so no leaks
Some typical rust in body, but not bad for the age. Car was a TN car for most of its life, only about 2-3 years in NY and he had car wash membership with undercarriage wash that he used regularly
Typical VW paint with clear coat peeling and fading on roof and some other areas
Car has clean title, but has had 2 insurance claims, 1st was a wreck that damaged driver door and fender, 2nd was a deer that jumped out and damaged bumper and fender
Glass lense headlights with HID headlight conversion done by Midwest Light Creations (he did a great job but I do not believe he is doing them anymore)
EBC dimpled and slotted rotors front and rear, AutoZone pads on front, EBC RedStuff pads in rear
Oil and filter changed every 10,000 miles or so using Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck oil
Gets around 54 mpg on highway road trips and around 44 mpg with his typical mostly city driving

I think that is about it as far as upgrades and maintenance stuff on the car.

It really is a great little car and will be a great commuter of project car for someone. Between Kraiger, myself and my son we have put a ton of time, energy and work into the car. We never went the bug turbo and tune route, but it honestly was a great driver as it especially with the 11mm HPFP and the 6-speed transmission he didn't NEED more power and performance like he yearned for with the automatic.

Take care and have a great evening!!!

Friday 10-4 update...

Car held prime in fuel system over night and is running fine now...

We'll set a price and post it up for sale soon. Likely do Facebook Marketplace listing to easily show pics and all...

Let me know if anyone has any questions or interest in it so it can go to a TDIClub member first if someone is looking for an ALH 6-speed Jetta.

Have a great evening!

That color sounds like Baltic Green. When was timing belt/water pump done last? Didn't see any mention of that, just the 11mm pump..

Hi,

Yes that looks like the color of his...

We did change the timing belt, water pump, idlers and all that at around 200,000 to 220,000 miles if I remember correctly. I've asked my son to check his notes... we purchased the full timing kit from idparts as far as I remember too.

I'll post up after he checks his notes and gets back to me.

Thanks and have a great night!

We haven't set a price yet... but leaning towards the $5,000 price range since there are not a lot of mk4 ALH TDIs for sale and even fewer manual transmission and I cant find a single 6-speed manual transmission one for sale...

Seems like a fair price to me since I've seen similar mileage 5-speed ones for $4-5,000 and this one has a virtually new 6-speed transmission.

What do you think?

Let me know if you are interested, I can text or email pics since I can't seem to include them in a post here.

Thanks for looking!

I haven't posted photos...

TDIClub doesn't seem to make it easy to post pics so I figured once we do a Facebook Marketplace ad then I'll post that link here...

If you want pics now send me a message with a number to text them to or email address.

Thanks,
Chris

Well, thanks for understanding and offering suggestions...

As I clearly stated this is a feeler and information gathering post... there are not many Mk4s for sale and certainly even less with a 6-speed manual transmission swap. So a) I was trying to gauge interest, b) I was trying to get an idea of what a fair price might be for the car, and c) I was trying to make sure that it would go to sincerely interested and like minded guys

Apparently the TDIClub community may have changed while I was away...

If you guys want to delete the thread that's fine. I wasn't trying to hurt anyone's sensibility at all...

As to photos... I cant seem to post photos in a post... and it seems like I'm not the only one either...

Anyhow, have a great day!!! Sorry if I wasted some of your time or bothered you...

Nope... TDIClub has been firm on this for 20 years. No feelers. Post pic, price and location or get deleted. What has changed is the leniency for this one to get derailed for as long as it did. It would have been gone day one back in the day.

No hard feelings by anyone, just rules.

It's a moot point

The thread has been moved and pics have been added...

Thanks for help in suggesting fair pricing though, that's what I was asking for. 😪

2005 Passat Wagon (BHW/5-spd conv, 03T). I keep in touch with the (2) ALH's I sold.
A cared for ALH with a 6-spd swap, $5k seems fair to me. When was the TB last done?

do you know the revs at 80 on the interstate?

Thank you sir!

If I remember correctly we did the timing belt with a full IDParts.com kit at around 200-220,000 miles.

I asked what rpm for freeway and I'll post an answer when he gets back to me.

Have a great afternoon!
