The tail light gaskets fit well. I didn't look too hard, but they don't look like they have the splits like the ones I removed.

I made new rubber washers with punches, 1/32" thick 40A durometer rubber sheet.

It's not the prettiest repair, but it should keep the water out.

We had some good rain here after I installed the tail lights. It appears that they are not leaking any more. One Wed the quarter panel vents will be here. Before I install them I'll give the tail lights a good soaking to make sure the leaks were fixes.

Last night I replaced the rear quarter panel vents. It's a little different design than the stock ones. I like the seal better. It's not a foam seal. It's a lip seal.

When I took out the tail lights to get the bumper off I found water in the passenger side tail light. Looks like the sealing job I did stopped another leak from letting the water drain.
I took the tail light out this morning then filled it with water at work.

Looks like water is coming out here.

I'll silicone that today then soak it tonight or tomorrow night to check it out.

I put a bead of silicone around the edge. This is about all I think I can do for this leak. I soaked it with a hose and there are no leaks in the car now.

Sold it!

I sold the Golf to a relative of a friend that's been looking for a TDI. He likes working on cars so this will be a good home for it! He'll keep it going for a long time. I encouraged him to join TDIClub too.

Thank you all very much for the help! This was a fun project. I think for my next project, I'm going to fix some issues with the '59 single cab.
