Hello,

I've encountered an issue with my TDI whereas my AC doesn't cool the car. As in no cold air at all. Things ive checked are the fans (turning visually), Compressor (engages visually). I've hooked guages to the lines and have charge and have followed the diagnostics proceedure as outlined in the Bentley manual. Can really only be two things I guess, compressor or expansion valve.

Can the compressor fail internally and still have the clutch engauge? I found a few videos on the compressor and how they work, but before I replace I want to make sure it is the cause as its a few hundred dollors to replace.

Thoughts?

There is a control valve inside the compressor that can fail. Its a cheap fix and something you can do on the car if you are mechanically inclined. Get some gauges and hook them up and report back both high and low side pressures.

We just did this on the jetta last week, parts are under $50 total plus freon.

Ok. I bad a chance to hook up gauges to the car. I came hp with 112psi low side and 125psi high side. That was with ac on high and no recirculation. i have poc of the guage dials if you want.

Are you absolutely sure the compressor clutch was engaged? Those pressures make it seem like the compressor isn't doing anything at all. Should see 30-40 on the low, and 150-250 on the high when its working. Having them being nearly equal suggests the pump isn't even running. Or its broken internally somehow, but that seems less likely.

Im sure the compressor was spinning...as i visually verified it was engaged. What im trying to do is validate compressor is actually working internally which doesnt seem to be tbe case. Just want to be sure before i drop cash on a compressor.

Since the two sides are almost equal, as compared to what they should be, most likely the Refrigerant Control Valve (RCV) is mostly bad and barely working. This valve works in conjunction with the fan blower speed to change how much the compressor functions to move the freon around.

You don't have to remove the compressor to change it, but you will need to remove the freon and replace after the swap.

There seems to be 2 items listed with the EX 10067 part number. Does it matter which ?

Give them a call. The person who answers knows some stuff vs just a phone answering person. I only saw one personally.
