I cannot seem to locate the specs for the cranking amps for a new battery on my 2001 diesel. I am hearing 750 or greater but would prefer to see something officially from VW
Thnks for the help.

You want an H7 or 94r battery. About the only place to get an 80amp hour battery is the dealer as it's a european spec.

I have always used OEM Varta batteries, but the Interstate MTP-94R-H7 is a drop-in.

And unfortunately you won't, since VW uses the European "Ah" (amp-hour) spec, rather than the North American CCA spec.

There's about a million threads on this and they all go this way: endless battles which is better, Ah or CCA, people chime in about the merits of different battery vendors and an Optima Red-Top, and at the end of the day you learn that a OEM battery from the dealer is surprisingly competitive, price-wise, and will for sure have the right Ah rating (unless they sell you the gasser version :))

Or, you can track down what Group (ie size) your battery is (per 1854sailer's post above it looks like a 94R) and shop for a good replacement that way... at the end of the day plate volume is pretty much plate volume.
