Hello Everyone,

Well just hit 200000km mark on my Jetta ( auto, chip + .184). This is what i've changed on the car so far:

1) 7 MAF's
2) Two Turbo's
3) 1 pair of axles ( due to heavy right foot i guess)
4) Many lightbulbs ( headlights, tailights etc...)
5) 2 sets of Window clips

The car has had its moments but overall i hope it keep it for another 200000km's but the engine seems to be louder than normal ever since i hit the 200k mark...

anyway Great Forum!!

Happy Holidays!!!!

Don't most TDIs run a little louder in Canada this time of year? When it's below zero Fahrenheit?

Once the engine is warm I don't know why it would it be any different than at warmer outside temps.

Cold air = dense air.....sound travels thru dense air much more effectivley than thin air.....Maybe that is why.

2000 tdi.....236000 km's 2 sets of brakes, one maf, two timing belts.(last change being the big one with h2o pump also) Serp belt, plastic skid plate replaced with aluminium evo plate and that is about it. Oh, and 4 new shocks recently . Window clips also(warranty)

Oh, glow plugs and new battery after 4 winters....pretty standard stuff. Been lucky I guess.

I just took this pic last week :)

1 MAF
2 sets of rear brakes, 1 set of fronts (brakes = rotors+pads)
1 oilpan (snow covered manhole cover = boom)
1 inner CV boot
Just did a deluxe TB kit from Roseland 10K ago (job was fun, but long)

Struts, window clips, tb's, WP, Rear hatch latch, brakes, front rotors, GP's, serpentine.

Still to do: Dr. door sensor switch; cruise control resme switch.

Not too bad for that milage.

Oh, and is the engineer who designed that stupid belly pan embarrased? I hope so.

Ok, newbie questions:
1) What's a MAF?
2) What are window clips?

Thanks, Mike

MAF is a mass airflow meter

Not got the foggiest on the clips? I don't even know if my car has window clips? :D

Good newbie questions.
The mass airflow sensor is located near the air filter and, as its name suggests, it monitors how much air is available to the engine. It provides this information to the engine control module (ECM), and is used to determine the quantity of fuel and the amount of turbo boost. MAF sensors rarely fail suddenly, they usually degrade because of contamination, thus a properly fitted air filter is important to keep your MAF healthy. Replacements used to be about $300, so their failures were more than an annoyance. Now they are generally about $80-130.

Window clips are metal or plastic pieces that grip the glass in your doors. In early A4 VW models, they broke quite often, with the result being that the windows dropped down into the door frames.

Other minor but annoying problems were the glovebox door hinges and the fragile dashboard cupholders.

I wasn't attempting to produce a comprehensive list -- I'm sure there are a few others.

Fortunately I've been immune to almost all except the MAF sensor failure. I say "almost" because I did have the dreaded "alternator pulley bearing" failure, and that has happened to enough TDI owners to qualify as a significant weak point.
