2000 Jetta ALH TDI Start, Immediate shut off

Hey all,

My 2000 seems to be acting up...

Key in to "On" Glow plug lights for ~3 seconds. Immobilizer lights for ~3 seconds. Both go out.

Turn key to crank, turns a few times, may or may not start, if it does start only runs for maybe 1-2 seconds and dies. Seems to be putting out some whitish fuel smelling smoke.

I've tried with the help of a jump with no success.

Swapped Relay 109 with another (grey) from a 2002 to no help.

Prior information:
Car has been increasingly harder to start (no directly linked with the cold).
Engine seemed to die with increasing frequency when going over speed bumps or at odd times while driving. Would restart with key cycle and cranking.
This issue has killed the starter, which has been replaced, still no solid start.

Any thoughts?

First scan the car to see return any fault code, check fuel filter and air in fuel system,check air filter and snow screen,check intake manifold restriction, engine speed sensor and ignition switch fault can cause engine start and then shut off.

Make sure the anti-shudder valve is not stuck closed. It's right in front of the EGR.

No air, no start.

I am assuming you have no MIL and a scan has disclosed nothing. A stuck anti-shudder valve will not normally trip a code.

.... ignition switch fault can cause engine start and then shut off.

Can you elaborate a bit on this? How to test/diagnose, ect?

I've checked Anti-shudder, moves freely and I can hear it cycle when the key is turned.

I can't seem to connect with my VCDS/VagCom setup. I had it working properly on another laptop which is now INOP. It's a mis mash setup with an ebay style cable. So I can't run code scans, ect.

MIL light is illuminated prior to start, but I can't remember if it typically is or isn't, I'll have to take a look at the other car.
