Wow. I assumed they were asking $2k each.
I think she originally wanted that, but when I threw it out there cause of my logistics, (gooseneck coming from CO) she didn’t bat an eye. Sounds like she needs them gone.

her phone returns her name with “PhD”, so I assume she is just ready to wash her hands of them.

I keep going down the matching His and Hers:ROFLMAO: or give them to my kids as first cars since I live 15 miles out of town and I’ll be paying through the nose for fuel. Not sure that’s a good idea though. As the Passat is prolly a lot safer and @Mozambiquer has a screaming deal on another Passat.

I keep ready how “safe” the Passat’s are as we have a crazy Mtn road driven by crazy drivers.....

Oh, she sent me additional photos of the manual wagon, looks clean and straight with only a broken glove box latch. No seat rips.

I literally drive past Carpinteria twice a day 5 days a week and a few weeks ago wanted to find a wagon. My Beetle is just too small to haul stuff.

I know nothing about BEW's though.

I've been fishing around for info on BEWs as well and a couple great mechanics I know that speak TDI seem fine with them. I'm currently looking at one for a friend and its got 200k on it; someone told me that at that kind of mileage that the cam is likely fine, that if it was going to crap out that it would do so before then (I'm assuming based on maintenance being consistent).

If these were close I'd find it hard to not jump on them.

It just seemed to me like she is so ready to move on she might call and have them scrapped at any moment, which would suck!!

Sadly, there's likely a lot of instances in which an otherwise good vehicle gets scrapped for petty things. Can't save them all.

The bew is a good engine, and if you run the right oil, the cam lasts very well. I've got one which wasn't well taken care of, it had over 215k miles and the cam finally failed. I say it has over 215k since that's when the previous owner swapped to a manual and the speedometer and odometer didn't work until I got it. He had it since 20k miles and abused it.

Regarding oil (I know, there are threads around for this but while I'm here and it has entered the discussion), if a BEW has been serviced by the dealer and gotten 5w30 (and later indy folks doing the same) is it a certainty that the cam is compromised? I've heard that 5w40 is the oil to use in these.

Yes, 5w40 505.01 spec oil. There is a 505.01 spec 5w30 oil, I only use the 5w40 version, simply because that's what is more available. Running the 507 spec oil which is for the newer cars, often causes issues, as they don't have the lubricity and shear stability for the cam.

So, as long as 505.01 spec oil then things should be OK? I thought I read people saying that even 5w30 505.01 oil was suspect.

People way smarter than me, search the threads, but basically stay away from 5w-30 even if it meats the 505.01 spec.

there are many great 5w-40 diesel oils that meet or exceed the 505.01 spec but never bothered to pay the royalty to be tested and market as a VW oil.

lots of BHW, BEW people have reliable service from Mobil TDT, Mobil Delvac ESP, T6, and more. I don’t run T6 cause my IDI consumes it. I run Delvac ESP cause I can get it in 5-gallon buckets once a year with a nice rebate.

the old Valvoline Euro Formula said recommended for 505.01, but they went to this restore formula and I can’t find it locally anymore.

some lightweight 5w-40 oils sheer down to 5w-30 in oil tests. The motor oil geek on YouTube explains stuff well

Some friends picked up a 98 Jetta (manual trans) years ago from a local Pic-N-Pull for something like $1,600. Original owners ditched it because of a death by one of the spouses and the car was triggering an alarm any time you opened the doors (I think that that was it; my friends readily resolved that issue). I think it had about 150k miles when they got it: now pushing 280k miles.

Certainly if one can get something for cheap then it's really worth saving.

Regarding oil, T6 is now CK4 spec in which case I stopped using. The previous incarnation was CJ4 (more ZDP). I switched to Motorcraft Heavy Duty Diesel oil as I found that the chemical makeup of it was nearly identical to the CJ4 T6. Newer spec oils are targeted toward DPFs and emissions (and "efficiency"- the weird low viscosity stuff).

Not sure if they're "good" but I used Montway to ship my Mercedes. Lower cost transport, which would probably work fine for something like this.

What is your definition of good?

I did okay when I shipped 3 Cars from NE Ohio To Flagstaff (~2200 miles) using Uship for around 4k.
2004 Beetle with no Power steering and a flat tire , 2012 JSW, and a Rolling Project - 76 Spitfire with no steering link.

Nearly next day delivery.
Picked up late on a Thursday and They were to Flagstaff by noon on Saturday, before I arrived.

Next time - I'll get a better price working directly with the subcontractor - ‪ALFO CARRIERS LLC out of Glendale az.
Call Cosmin cell at Link to DOT Page with his number.
(Not sure if the forum rules permit me to enter a number here)

He was very easy to work with.
(They worked hard with the car that had no steering)
Had I known how easy he was to work with, I would have packed the car with many, many more spare parts.
