2.0L CR burns lots of fuel idling?

I have had scan gauges in pretty much all mine and some family members cars and always have the L/hr function set on. But in my 2013 Jetta TDI, the Litres per hour number is strangely high...
I just want to point out all numbers are up to operating temp. when the engines are idling in Park, or Neutral with no A/C or other load on the engine, as recorded on multiple scan gauges calibrated correctly to each vehicle.
My old 2001 Jetta TDI: 0.3l/hr
Moms "old" 2014 Tiguan: 0.7 l/hr
Moms new 2015 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel: 0.5 L/hr
My old 12v 2000 Jetta VR6: 1.0L/hr
2006 BRM Jetta TDI: 0.4L/hr(her MFI also says that).

But with my CR 2013 Jetta, the car itself says about 0.6L/hr on the display, but the scan gauge says a whopping 1.2L/hr when NOT regenning. Why is it so freaking high? And which number is correct on my Jetta, the 0.6 or the 1.2? Is that normal?

Even the 0.6 number seems high, especially considering my moms Tiguan burned 0.7l/hr when warm. What gives?!?

Why would you be idling any of these cars for more than a few minutes? These numbers are high compared to what? Is there some standard provided by the manufacturer?

Is the Tiguan diesel?
Is the electric aux heater active at the moment you are capturing data?

Test your Jetta with fully warm engine, headlights switched off. Also, switch off the cabin vantilation/fan by pointing the blower to speed "0" (if you have Climatic) or pressing the OFF button if you have climatoronic. Ensure heated mirrors are not activated (know at L or R) and rear window demist is also off. Check the consumption and report back.

Why do you care what your Scan Gauge says about idle figures?

Miles Traveled ÷ Gallons of Fuel Used = MPG

Don't think too much...

I don't know the answer so I going to say why do you ask?

What difference does it make?

And who cares?

Oh, and don't worry about it.

I only idle my cars for a few seconds, even in -30. I start up from cold and drive gently until optimal temp is achieved. I only noticed these numbers as I park the car and look at the scan gauge before I turn it off. I'm just wondering why my 2013 Jetta is using more fuel at idle than a V6 diesel ram? It makes no sense as to why so I'm wondering if others are noticing the same thing.

My fuel economy is where it should be (42mpg in the winter) but I'm just wondering why my car is using more fuel than a V6 diesel ram compared to a 4 cylinder diesel Jetta, when idling. It's just strange, that's all.

I would tend to believe The MFD. The calibration for your car could be wrong in that scangage. Ask the scangage manufacturer why there is such a big difference between the MFD and their scangage.

Your not answering his question.

He never said anything about long idle times, but why the numbers he got were so different between the MFD and his scangage.

When you measure something the only thing worse than no data is data you can't trust.

Guess I should have put in the sarcastic smiley. I was poking fun at the two out of three who felt they needed to respond but didn't answer your question.

My thought is the scan gauge is looking at fuel going thru the system, but the car supplies more fuel than needed and returns unneeded fuel back to the tank. the car computer is figuring that into the number it shows.

Fuel burn calc'd from injector signal and rail pressure, has nothing to do with return fuel. Suspect the scangauge is giving bad data. Engine not likely burning 1.2/hr.
