There are multiple reasons I am not in the 13's yet....

Weight, my car is heavier than most Jetta's. Plus I still don't take anything out of the car when I race. Everything I drive the car with is still in there when I am at the track.
Again my times are a representation of what my car is capable of at any given time.

I will try and weight it soon. I am expecting it to be 34-3600 #'s

Tune, I do not run any special race tunes. The same tune I daily commute and road trip is the same file I race and dyno with.

At the events I went to this year if at any time during the day I ran faster than 13.99 I would be out of the competition. Running in the low 14's keeps me as the fastest car in the slower bracket. It's alway fun passing people on the track. Especially when they get the jump on you.

I could have thrown the Firad's in and would have had no problem getting into the 13's, I chose not to. To me it is redundant to install them until the new head is done. I already know it needs air more than fuel right now.

The lighter cars get me off the line, duh, but once I hit 3rd they become decorations in my mirrors.

I get the 6 speed weight. That's why I got 16 pound 17" wheels lol

Took it across the scales today. With the normal gear, myself and 8 gallons of fuel in the tank.
Front wieghed in at 2,000lbs even
Rear weighed in at 1,450lbs
For a combined weight of 3,450lbs. It is not light weight by any means and I still haven't installed any extra sound deadner yet.

My 18" wheels are 18lbs so that's not a huge contributor.

There isn't much that had changed in the last few months...

I bumped into someone on my way home from work in November. A less than 5mph tap. Insurance paid about $5k for the repairs. My buddy at the body shop was nervous about trying to reproduce my core support but he did a great job, looks just like I did the first one.

Replaced the brakes last month due to warped rotors. Too many high speed slow downs.
Put on a full set of EBC Red Stuff pads and EBC Power Slot rotors. I finished bedding them in last week and have yet to see how they stop. They are definitely smoother than the old warped rotors.

Aside from that I drive it back and forth to work across the Portland Metro. In moderate to heavy traffic I have been seeing 47-49mpg. I am getting anxious to make a road trip to see what straight highway milage is.

I am calling the machine shop today to prod them to get started on a couple of heads we have waiting to be ported and polished. I want to have these done in the next month or so, I really want to be done before race season starts up. I have a few drag races I want to attend and a few hill climb events.

be very careful with these brakes when they are cold. i almost hit a car at the first brake-pedal, near my house. but if you manage to get them hot, you can lose you sunglasses from your face .

It is doing great. I have the 29# flywheel and the stage 3+ clutch.
I have about 25k miles on it now, that includes a few trips to the track and lots of commuting. I do not have the newer silent clutch disc, mine is noisy. I will change to the silent disc when I pull the motor out. The stage 3+ pressure plate is definitely heavier than stock, and can take a week or two for your leg and foot muscles to get used to. I have foot problems, and occasionally I wish it was lighter, but I will survive.


For an update...
I replaced the drivers side axle a couple weeks ago. It had started clicking. It felt solid but with the new axle in the click is gone. I will probably have a set built for the future.

Machine shop pressure tested my old head and as suspected the #2 exhaust port had a sizable crack in it. Crack was about 3/8" long, parallel to the top of the valve seat, about 1/2" up.

My head porter is slicing the old one up for research, then the new heads will be started on.

Other than that all is well.

What did the crack intersect? a water jacket or into the cylinder?

I think you mentioned you had your valve spring situation worked out, if you need more force, let me know. I will be getting a batch of custom springs in soon for +40% seat force and 10mm lift.

Long time since my last update...

I bought a 09' BMW 335d last September. It has caused me to not drive the Jetta for the last 9 months. I have been letting my brother drive it back and forth to work since then. He has fallen in love with it but can not afford to buy it from me.

Today I dropped the bimmer off for am oil change and brakes, plus my wife's 09' JSW is in the shop for a new hpfp and complete fuel system. So I got the 04' back and will be driving it for the weekend. I have to say the 04' still has plenty of fun left in it. My brother drives it like a grandmother, needless to say it needs a good Italian tune up. The engine has about 60k on it since the build, I had Old Poopie do a timing belt on it a few weeks ago just to be safe. Still haven't had any real issues with it since the ported head cracked.

I am currently debating selling the 04', if there is anyone interested in it let me know. I would entertain offers over $16k, pretty good deal figuring I have a giant folder of receipts that add up to over $60k plus the price of the car. If no one wants it I will hang on to it until I build my shop and have some more time to put the engine into something RWD and more fun.

the audi a6 biturbo is the creme, 650nm at 1500rpm

I also hear the OEM trannys don't hold the TQ very well but maybe just hearsay..

Still a nice upgrade with some tweaks

No the head has been replaced. Just a stock used PD150 head with colt stage2 and R783's.

Sure it gets good FE but that's a new benz diesel with the same performance, or could buy a lot of gas in a used porsche that does 12 sec 1/4 miles stock.

And at the end of the day, it's still a nose-heavy econobox with front wheel drive.

You wont find a 14 sec jetta tdi mk4 out there as well built. It runs smooth, power is linear, and there is little to no smoke. The suspension is the perfect blend of performance and comfort, and the interior is perfect with all the best upgrades.

That $60k is not just for the build, it is pretty much any and everything I have bought or put on the car in the last 9 years.

Plus. I never set out to build a drag car nor did I do things to help make it faster when I went to the track. It is a representation of what the car does any given day commuting.
It has things that I appriciate and still enjoy compared to the 335d. The 335d has things that I like more than the Jetta. It's comparing two completely different cars with the same idea. Great drivability.

yeah I agree that's a little harsh. Doing something at the time that not many are doing and learning as you go costs quite a bit.

I had lunch with Travis last Fri. He is doing great. His brother now drives the car, Travis went to a bmw 330d, then got the BMW i3 about 6 months ago. Its a pretty neat car!
