From what I've read there hasn't been many failed turbos on the newer 2.0 CR, but mine went kaput at 73,000. Lost pwr, no pop or anything, turbo whine after that.

What I've read also is there's less coking with the new ULSD so that shouldn't be an issue, especially with the hiway driving I do. I've done all the recommended maintenance using VW parts and oil. So was I just one out of 1000 and unlucky?

What did I miss? Should the lwr intercooler hose be checked more often for oil? I'm trying to wrap my head around this.

thanks.

Have you checked the actuator on the turbo? Does it hold vacuum?

Well, the diagnosis is coming from a VW dealer. I realize they may replace the whole turbo and not just the VNT actuator. Apparently it's the "re-designed" replacement.

Just wondering about causes like not checking the intercooler hose for oil
or coking with the new ULSD>

Probably just 1 out of a 1000. Even the best mfg has some small percentage of failure rate. If there was any kind of an even minor systemic problem it would be all over the forums here. Look at the hpfp issue. Small percentage real issue, lots of discussion! Is the dealer covering or are you out of pocket for the expense?

Did it actually fail at all, or is there something unrelated that failed?

This is a dealer we're talking about, after all.

extended warr. covered it. As far as diag., I can only go by what dealer says. Will ask for old turbo.

Is it common practice to check for oil in the lwr intercooler intake every oil change?

There are just too many to list....
Extended warranty companies don't care about what you do with the old parts. And while the manufacturer's warranty does, Volkswagen rarely ever collects those parts after the clutter up the dealer parts department for several months.

I do not think it is a known part of oil change maintenance on these cars.
I am almost certain the dealer would not do this as part of an oil change.
They might if you were complaining about a large degree of oil usage.

cars back with new turbo. old one went back to VOA. Checked it out and didn't really see anything that stood out. No visible damage to blades. Both sides spun. Exhaust side had light coking. Maybe a slight play in shaft on the intake side.

Car runs fine, but now I'm in hyper carefull mode. :(
