While shopping the availability at several Seattle area dealers I was shocked to see this 'adjustment' on top of the MSRP. This doesn't count shipping at over $700.

It appears, at least University VW, the demand is so high, its becoming the new Miata, or Mini - wait lists - and dealer price gouging.

Be happy if you got yours before the rush.

If you ordered (not picked it off the lot) your JSW TDI with the options you wanted at a WA dealer and got a fair price - I would appreciate hearing from you.

If you had this type of gouging by the dealer it might be nice to create a list of dealers to avoid until things cool down.

Much grass,
Rick

Rick, I called a dealer in Spokane who wanted $3900 over MSRP!!!! Needless to say I did not shop there. I'm in Montana and the JSW is hard to find here. Some are listed at MSRP, and some have a market rate adjustment of $1200. I got mine for MSRP on Saturday. It was the only one the dealer had, but they wanted to move it and fought hard but dropped the market rate adjustment.

You might try Larson in Tacoma. Better yet, just let your fingers do the work, and negotiate online through email if you must deal with "local" dealers. Less frustrating that way, and saves fuel.

I worked with a Seattle area dealer earlier in the year, and I think it might have been Larson, where they were willing to sell '09s at MSRP, but they just didn't have the JSW I wanted (I wanted only the wagen protection kit and the extra airbags). I ended ordering a '10 through Chris@Langhorne.

The point and laugh at the dealer, followed by walking off the lot and "I'll buy a vehicle from here when h*ll freezes over" is the appropriate response to price gouging --- because that is what this is. Some Ford dealers are engaging in this same practice with the Fusion. The "bad will" they generate for themselves and the brand is the end result.

It is truly the meaning of the idiom that when something makes you happy you tell your friends and family, when something pisses you off, you tell everyone.

Portland dealers wanted at least $3k over. I called most every dealer from the Canadian border to the California border, and most were the same. We were headed to Las Vegas for a meeting my wife had to attend. I called Desert VW and they sold me a car for MSRP. We made the drive home a vacation. Make some calls. Only talk with the internet sales folks. Be willing to get on a plane and take a nice (high MPG) drive.

Guys, thanks for the feedback. Human behind thebigarniedog, I couldn't agree more that negative word of mouth does nothing to promote a business - especially when that 'word' is electronic. However, as the saying goes and tomo points out, there is always some fool waiting to be parted from his money, so it appears I will have to go on a hunt. It's will definitely be more interesting than the more civilized approach (like with Audi, MB, BMW, P-car) of checking the tick boxes on an order sheet and 3 months the exact car arrives - so what is with VW anyway? The own so many pretigous marques and ordering a car to spec seems nary impossible (at least from the feedback I am getting from another local dealer - Chaplin's).

Sorry for my ignorance, but who is Chris@Langhorne?

Why? ...... the idiom is never get into an argument with an idiot, you have to reduce yourself to their level and they have you on experience. Idiotic behavior is similar. Numerous recent examples that can be cited of people doing stupid stuff to get the next must have toy first (eg: first generation IPHONE; PS3; 2009 tdi; most gotta have toys over-hyped before Christmas etc). Stated differently, I don't understand the "overwhelming need" to play a game designed by idiots (VW & their dealerships) and run by fools (the must have now people).

Ultimately, the price of that "must have purchase" falls like a stone and the same idiots move on to the next "must have product". What you learn as you get older is impulse control (i.e patience). So wait the fools out and avoid the gougers --- it works for me.

I know near Chicago dealers aren't moving much off sticker. Jennings VW in the north is going $300 below MSRP. However, I was able to find one in Wisconsin with a $27800 sticker (auto, pan roof, 17inch wheels) and had them swap the wheels to the standard 16inch and the price was $26100. (It's not the largest discount in the world but it was something).

I also traded in a car and got a decent price for it.

Now I read about the 40K mile DSG cost and don't know if this car will really be worth it in a long run.

I will wait and see.

Check with Chris Farnham of Langhorne VW in PA (just outside of Philly). He has consistently sold these cars for the lowest prices. It is worth a 1 way plane trip & a drive home.

For that much money, find one in another part of the country. Take a week off of work, fly out there and enjoy a beautiful drive a cross the country on your new CarCation :)

what's a big deal? have you never bought anything at discount at any retail POS?

it is a market price in making, if you and me paid those adjustments, it'd be market price on that day; since neither of us did, market price may have been lower.

it is not really market economy here (given recent CFC), so I can understand your anger (and mine) when dealers take CFC incentive and then try to max their profit after it. This is inevitable evil of Gov, intervention let along such a corrupt and rather socialist one as current (not that previous was any better).

Just a little wobbly back on the bike after a long time away??

Unless you are in heavy stop/go traffic all the time or have a back or below the hip medical issue I'm betting by the first oil change you will be pretty comfortable w/ three pedals again.

Oh, and congrats on a sharp looking car!

I picked up my new JSW 6-speed on Saturday. Hadn't driven a stick in many years. Killed it the first time I tried to take off. I am already getting used to it, and wouldn't trade for an auto for anything (ok, I would for $$:)). I'm still not back to fully comfortable but can tell it won't take too long.

I went through this too...and bought a DSG instead

I hope you are kidding about selling at this point. I went through this agony after I ordered my JSW with the manual back in the summer. I test drove a couple of manuals and managed to stall them several times but I was determined that I could return to manual form after over 20 years of automatics. But after weeks of thinking about the amount of shifting I would have to do on our crowded So Cal freeways I chicked out and bought a DSG model instead. My wife was pissed (she loves manuals but doesn't have to commute like I do) but I dreaded buyer's remorse so I searched and bargained to find a deal to justify spending the extra money. Fortunately, it all worked out and I love my DSG.

Hang in there...and think about how much money you'll save not having to pay or maintain a DSG.

I bought mine from him and got it shipped for less than MSRP all said and told to the Bay Area, none of the local dealers could come close. Good to work with, did everything over the phone and via fedex.

MSRP JSW in Seattle

Check out Carter Motors in Ballard - Seattle, WA. I ordered my JSW TDi and paid MSRP. They do require a 500 deposit and do to various mix ups I waited a long time, but it was worth it. I didn't have the very very best experience with Carter Motors, but again no bs markup.

Talk to Leighton Russell. He should be able to help you out.
