My main recommendation would be to get ahold of
VCDS.
If you're serious about keeping the car for some years, it will pay for itself in short order.
I'd like to see the timing graph to get an idea of how your injection pump is behaving.
I would also make sure the timing belt (and everything the belt touches) is "within date".
Verify physical timing, scan for codes, and look at the timing graph in VCDS.
