I have a 1997 Passat TDI that has been involved in an auto accident. Therefore, this vehicle has severe front body damage and a salvage title. The engine, however, is still in running condition. It still starts up post-accident and sounds good. I was able to drive the car over short distances as well. The car has remained in the same family since coming home from the dealer and has been taken care of properly.
Engine is a 1.9 Z1 which has undergone continuous maintenance at the specified service intervals by a tdiclub recommended technician (Davidson's Import Auto of Fairborn, Ohio) since the car was brand new. The odometer reads 246,242 miles. The last timing belt and water pump service was performed at 184,000 miles. The injector nozzles were replaced and injection pump resealed two years ago. The intake was cleaned out spring of 2012.
This car would make a good donor or engine swap candidate since it contains many useable parts in addition to the engine. The airbags did not deploy and other than a collapsing headline, the interior is in good condition. It would also be possible to make the car road worthy once again, though it would take some work to acomplish considering the damage and salvage title.
