Another swap done - and done on a teenager's budget!
The project stared out as 1991 Volkswagen Jetta Coupe with 181.000km and a 102hp 1.8L "RV" engine that was leaking oil all over the place and the transmission was pretty much shot.
The engine was originally installed in my son's 1986 Golf GTI that unfortunately got a little too close to a Honda.
The donor engine is a mixed bag of parts:
- 2000 ALH engine
- VB43 Turbo from the European PD170
- 0.216 nozzles (Race 520s are coming)
- 3 bar MAP sensor
- Front mounted Audi A4 intercooler
- 2003 EDC15 engine electronics, merged into the original CE2 harness and reduced down to what was only necessary.
- Retain coolant glow plugs.
- Generic "Bosch Style" relay for the cylinder glow plugs.
- EGR / ASV / MAF delete.
- Fully functioning Cruise Control
- Fast Forward Tachometer converter - new prototype!
- Malone Stage 4 custom tune
- Passat B4 pedal assembly
- DQA code "02J" gearbox with short throw kit
- 1998 TDI single mass flywheel and clutch
- Boost and Pyrometer gauges
- Straight thru 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust system
Bird's eye view
Honda clutch reservoir, glow plug relays, N75 location, speedometer cable routing.
Front mounted Audi A4 intercooler
3 inch tail pipe
Nothing horribly complicated with this conversion other than just taking a lot of time to deal with the small details so it doesn't look like a total visual disaster. I would say 40 to 50h start finish on this project.
