198k ...service transmission jetta tdi?

2001 jetta manual transmission. I read these are lifetime transmissions and don't need service. I called local shop with much diesel experience. He said I'm better off leaving it alone as he can't guarantee it will work after servicing it....Does this sound right? No issues with transmission, but at 198 I'm thinking it could use a little love...

VW calls it "lifetime" because they don't expect you to keep it 200k and 20 years. Go ahead and change the fluid.

Probably take to dealer...local guys say changing at this point may ruin transmission....
