Big thanks to mbatzel for working on the rust issue today. We planned to help and work with him but Doug ended up working on the heater box most of the time, and I supervised for most of the day...

that sand filled thing sits on the floor depression so floor feels level. My scirocco has it too. I think it also provides some sound deadening effect too

That padding is also heat insulation from exhaust parts. Make sure to replace it with something of better or same quality. Don't make your cleaned carpets start smoking from the exhaust heat. From my experence with my Jeep Cherokee.

Ok I've been doing alot if thinking and I've decided to not swap this engine into a jeep I'm going to leave it be and fix up the jetta to the standards it deserves. However I might look into an aircooled beetle build or something along those lines...

Ok were looking for suggestions for pain colors... I think I'm looking for a flat color keeping with theme of the car..
. Suggestions so far...
Flat black
Flat od green
Flat copper

Lets hear some suggestions and pictures....

Alot more work got done with the welder yesterday... And the rear fender is still a bit rough but looks great..... Very impressed with it!!

Note the small hole on drivers side floor board looked small quickly grew..

I tried my hand at this one... I'll say this its much harder then it looks.. It's most definitely an art but it's something I could get into....

Then came a bit of bondo and primer.. He says it's still rough and there is a bit more sanding to do but it looks great already..

C'mon dont you like to live on the wild side?
Some people like to have unprotected relations with questionable acquaintances... I prefer to cut, grind, & weld with no eye protection! :cool:

No wonder so little work got done while I was gone! Damn photo session took place haha! Now that you have Ron on camera actually WORKING, he is never going to let us live this down.

You let me know when you want to bring er back into the shop so that we can finish up the rear door and start on the trunk.

Sounds good....

Diesel gurus... Where is the water temp needle supposed to sit at normal operating temperature?

Around the middle. It'll fluctuate some based on driving conditions, that's normal, and the extremes are where it's not supposed to be. (If it's in the white area on the right, that's too far!)

Since I fixed the heater it's running I'd say 1/4 of the way up.. Is that to low. I could swear it used to sit dead center, but not anymore. What could be the cause of this... Any thoughts?

Also on the gas gauge when it hits the red is that out of fuel or at the end of that red patch?

That's too low for cruising temperature. Check the coolant temp sensors, check the thermostat, and maybe consider a grille block.

For the fuel gauge, it depends on the individual car. Some may last past the red, some may not even make it to the red. Be careful with experimenting too much here.

Your stealing much more heat now for your cabin. Maybe that's part of what's lowering your temp a bit.

I agree on the rad block. Rig up some cardboard and see what the results are.

It should return to center after running for a little bit. This one has me puzzled a little bit. An old trick with cars that used to have overheating issues, muscle cars for example, was to turn the heat on full blast to drop the engine temps a solid 15-20 degrees. Problem was, it only lasted for so long. All heaters basically work the same way, unless you own the new mini's that are run off electric, they draw their heat from the motor. That's why if you turn the heat on full blast when you first start up a car, it's cold. Interested to hear what people have to say about older VW's.

Blocking the radiator in the winter months on diesels is nothing new. Big rigs do it all the time. It's worth a shot.

The thermostat is partially stuck open not allowing the car to fully warm up....check to see how the upper and lower radiator hoses differ in temperature during warm-up. If the thermostat is stuck open both hoses will feel luke warm and about the same temp....

Starting from cold, the upper hose should stay cold (no flow from the engine) until the temperature gauge is at full running temperature. If the thermostat's not fully closing it will be letting warm water through from a pretty early stage.
