Hey y'all (that's a new phrase I learned here in Utah)!

Here's the results from the 130 MPH Club:

1. reddiesel - 117.8 mph
2. mickey - 114 mph
3. norm - 113 mph
4. johnathan bartlett - 109 mph
4. smartdrive - 109 mph

Bumblebug (chipped 1.8T New Beetle) - 109 mph

HA HA HA! He was way bent about it too.

I hope this results are accurate.

You had to be there. The TDI's did very well when you consider a 227 HP Subaru WRX turned 126 and an Audi S4 129. There were Corvettes and other high horsepower cars running no faster than what the TDI's were. That plume of black coming out the back had spectators really wondering what was going on. It was a great time
, but does the salt ever reflect the sun. I think all the attendees were a little crisp after the day.

HEY HEY I am not knockin yall - don't get me wrong

Fantastic that you were there - if any of ya get an official copy of the results post it up there so we can go around telling people how well the TDIs did!

It was just funny - cause i made a comment about a beetle never making 130 . . . in the power forum . . . well sure give it a 50 mph tail wind down hill with 10 miles and you have a chance in mickey's evil beetle or BG's machine

The red jetta has a chip and injectors. It just happened to be running properly. I spent about the last 1/4 mile of each run bouncing off "warp field collapse." With my huge turbo the MAF signal is so high the pump can't supply enough fuel to keep up.

It only got worse as they day went on. Now I've got a constant CEL, indicating an "injection start differential" and some kind of "unknown error...intermittant or short to ground."

The Upsolute unit which worked too well at home (600 ft) was in MIL mode for most of the runs at Bonneville. It did clear itself up finally but the runs were done by then.
On a straight flat paved section of I80 I was able to eke out a dismal 115 indicated after about 3 miles of flat out operation. The lack of air caused problems for any effort, not just the engines. I found myself gasping for breath after shagging cones at the auto-cross.

Just a thought....I could not get Amoco Premier in Utah. My car was smoking much more than normal. Got back to KC and put in a fresh tank of AP. Smoke almost completely gone and boost was about 2 psi higher at a see level. I think if I had a higher cetane product it may have helped.

mickey, i have seen that "intermitent short to ground" with alot of MAF failures

reddiesel and all, great job and it was great to hear about your awesome runs

Sustained boost is generally about 2 psi lower up here as the computer tries to limit boost to protect the turbo. Not enough, though, apparently.

There is no such thing as "Amoco Premier" in Utah, though a few unscrupulous retailers claim to have it. It's also standard to see a little more smoke up here, regardless of your cetane level. There just isn't enough air to go around.

p.s. Garrett: I think you're right. My MAF may be biting the dust. I'm going to see if I can borrow one to test that theory. The "Injection start difference" has me flummoxed, though. It didn't do that until I removed Karmann Ghia's 3-pot tuning box.

p.p.s. I think 120 mph is certainly possible for a TDI, but that last 10 mph is probably impossible to achieve. MPH start getting very expensive the faster you go. You can certainly rule out a Bug from the competition for aerodynamic reasons. A Jetta, B4 Passat or a Golf are the only realistic candidates.

I'm going to give it another try next year. I'd like to see BG or some other propane-powered lunatic join me!

Nice running to all. 110+mph is pretty darn good at that altitude. Sure do wish I had been there to see it all happen as I had been dreaming of this all last year. Congrads to all who did make it and put on a good show for the TDI crowd!!!

I tried a rough run in the Jetta using the GPS for speed and mileage just once and made it to 110mph. Could probably do a little better but I think that 115 would be about it.

Don't know if this helps, Mickey, but that is the error I got when my timing was advanced too far.

Well, I jammed my timing clear off the scale at Bonneville, but I've backed off now. I'm not sure exactly where it is, though, because my laptop's power cord accidentally went home to Rock Springs in the Cotton Ball. As soon as it returns in the mail I'll check the codes again.

I think excessively advanced timing and a failing MAF are my problems.

Mickey, If you need one right away I could swing by. I would hate to hear you blew a head gasket, because of excessive advanced timing!

I don't know exactly where it is now, but it's not in any danger. I retarded it until the loud clatter went away.

I have had the same Injection Start Difference error on Blueberry since I got it 1.5 years and 40,000 miles ago. I took it to a dealer while it was still under warrenty and they reset it just said not to worry about it that my computer was throwing sporradic codes. They kindly informed if it turned red (check engine light) and started blinking to then worry about it. It took them probably 4 hrs to tell me this and I got irritated left and never went back. Sometimes the code will clear and not come on for awhile but it is most often there. No one has been able to tell me anything about it.

No TDI's listed on the autocross results. It appears that only those cars receiving trophies are listed. Two trophies were awarded in H-Stock and only two cars are listed in the results, but about 8 to 10 ran in that class that day.

Where did you find the auto cross results. We have been on SCCA.org Utah region and the results from the September race are not posted yet. The day of the race I was told at the end that I was first in the HS-t class and 4th overall in the stock street tire class. - diesels rule!!!!!!

DOH!
I saw a posting for the results of the "last two events" and clicked on the ones run on the 22nd. It just now hit me that the 22nd was JULY'S results, not the September 23rd results.
Oops! Now I'm waiting for the results, too, again.

You may have noticed at the salt flats that I kept wondering around with my video camera recording almost anything that moved. After uploading the footage onto computer I am now able to produce video files of your runs (the ones I recorded anyway). Jane should have a copy of them all by now for potential inclusion on the CD she is making, but I thought I’d give you the chance of an advance copy.
I can produce .avi’s or .mpeg’s at varying sizes from 768x576 uncompressed to ridiculously small and unrecognisable, just email me with your format of choice and I’ll email them off to you, Jane has mpeg4 versions at 384x288 which is fine on most machines to blow up to full screen.

Average file size is about 14MB, so if a large email is a problem let me know and I’ll set up a temporary ftp server so you can download them. In case your wondering I haven’t put them on the pics server due to the total file size been about 154MB and I don’t want to hog Fred’s space.

The footage has already brought back a lot of memories not least the one of me missing my own car as I drove around in a bouncy castle, how I would have loved to run that on the flats

Unfortunately Mickey I didn’t get any footage of the road rage incident with Johnathan Bartlett and the Amish cart

False alarm, I misread “Run Results for all runs made Sept. 22, 2001” to include ALL RUNS – sorry it does not include 130 club runs.
