Howdy,
my first post here, and even though I had my first TDI nearly 20 years ago I came here to ask a few specific questions regarding the VW 1.9 TDI engines.
I would like to know if the headline's engine parts were all cast, or were some of them forged? Or possibly some combination?
What sort of reputation does the crank enjoy?
Anyone can recommend reasonably priced forged pistons?
Thanks,
Erik

I reply myself, if nothing more than what I've found out.

Crank is apparently of good reputation, someone even said "never heard of a crank failure".
But is it cast or forged..?

I did find at least one case of failed conrod, but as they say in Germany, Ein Mal ist kain Mal.

Pistons are cast aluminum, not forged.

Any comments and info are highly invited.. :)

I believe VW forges their cranks, but that is supposition by me based on historical operations. I could be way off, what with uneducated bean counters sticking their noses where they don't belong. After all, looking at some of the other places where they've screwed the pooch, it would be unwise to bet on anything anymore.

Cheers,

PH

Thanks guys, it does make sense with what, 19:1 compression? to have a bit more robust crank.
I suppose the connecting rods are cast?
