1.9 BRM no start after complete rebuild

I built this engine back in August and installed it in January. A friend helped me prime the fuel system. The more I crank it the closer it sounds to firing off but I don't want to kill the starter. I'm getting black smoke out of the tail pipe. Not sure if that's good or bad. I've got full version VCDS but I'm not sure what to check that will help me. Pointing me in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.

I'd run a full scan and see what appears. There's a few reasons for a no start, but it's best to check a full scan first to see if there's any clues.

Simple things to also check, cranking RPM(should be getting to around 200), voltage, double check the grounds, check to make sure the EGR/shudder valve isn't closed, ensure that the fuel system isn't losing prime.

There's other wiring issues to possibly check, but issues related to a position sensor and such would usually show up in a scan.
