I'm a newbie with this type of vehicle. How do veterans carry luggage on top without damaging the glass??Fixing to hit the road for the holidays and I MIGHT need to throw something on top. Is there something i can pick up at the dealership to fit over the side rails? Thanks.

Nor sure I understand: you want to load stuff directly on the roof? Wow...

Normally you get the transverse bars and specific cargo load equipment attaches to the bars: bike racks, ski racks, cargo box etc.

The sport wagon has rails running the length of the roof.

The dealer will have attachments, surely, but you can also try a place like Thule.

09 JSW TDI

Just got a Thule Ocean 100 cargo box off of Craigslist (unused) for $200, purchased load bars (part # 1KM 071 151) for JSW. Loaded up and headed out today for 3200 mile trip.

box holds 2 dog crates (wire/folded), and a framed backpack.

We'll see how the mileage fares...

You'll do better with either Yakima or Thule crossbars rather than the VW bars. The Yakima LowRider mounts are $135 - $150, crossbars are $65. Here is a pic of what they look like mounted (with bike racks):

I didn't embed the image into this comment because it's kinda big.
