Repost, has anybody had the same problem with low DSG oil?

And what damage (potentially) does it do to the transmission?

DSG oil change post
Thank you LF06VWSTDI!

Our '05 Golf TDI 1.9 (we are the second owners from 40 000km, 46 000km now and dealer serviced by the book - so far) lost drive after doing a brisk right hand roundabout and then going straight. The engine flared up like when there is not enough oil in a conventional automatic transmission.
Also lost drive on take off once and was slow to engage starting to reverse up hill.
Transmission had two faults logged. Don't know which as the operator reset them and didn't tell us.

Changed trans oil today but only two liter drained out and it was quite greyish.
Refilled 5.5 liter and 1 liter drained out after i checked the pan temperature on the sump bowl with an infra red sensor (35 deg. C.)

Any thoughts would be appreciated re. the flaring (like missed gear) and slow reverse engagement as well as loosing drive when taking off from an intersection. The car just 'crawled' through but proceeded as normal once the engine was turned off and restarted:confused:

Cheers, Sepp

I've posted this just in case someone else has had that problem.

In the meantime i thoroughly test drove the car going through a round about fast enough to induce massive understeer (these cars handle a bit like a shopping trolley) and found no transmission/engine flare. So, it was low oil in the DSG. Wonder if the factory under filled or the previous owner had problems and the Dealer 'repaired' it?

Oldies But Goodies

:) Oilhammer, thanks for your list of great old cars! I guess that many posters will have favorites that didn't make the cut,

I once restored a beautiful little 1968 toyota Corona, one of the models that Toyota has in the Smithsonian car museum. Even tho they thought it was too big and no one would ever want a car that size, you still needed to be a contortionist to get into the front seat.

When we bought our new Versa in 2007, it was to replace a 1994 Nissan Maxima.
It's 'Oyster Pearl' in color, biege interior, a/t a/c 3 ltr V6, auto clilmate control, roof, etc.
It's been sitting in the barn now for these past 3 years and I have been wondering what to do with it. It has 85,000 miles on it and is still in mint condition.
My wife always loved that car and wouldn't let me sell it trade it or give it away to family...

Our Versa SL with CVT (36,000 miles) is another story, it's going to a grandson when he graduates from University next year. (I think I will encourage him to trade it off on something else from your list)

So what the H#ll, I guess I'll go out and dust off 'Max' and put her back on the road when that happens. Live and learn.

P.S. if you get forum pressure to add VW to your list...make a place for the 1971 Super Beatle.
(we paid $1985.00 for 'Herman' brand new, and would cost at least twice that to buy back now if the 2nd owner would part with him, or is still alive.)

Have owned 6 VW Bugs starting from 1959 to 1975, tore down at least 4 more for parts to build an ATV, but IMHO the '71' was the best of the Original VW Bugs.

Yep, the ol' rear drivers. 1.8L hemi engine... 3T maybe? ....old outdated design even when new, but they were tough little cars. Rust took most of those off the road. '81 was the first year for the square headlamps. I owned about 7 of these E70 Corollas here and there was I was a teenager. They were plentiful and cheap. My favorite was a 1982 wagon model that had the rare 4-speed OD automatic. Car was near mint condition. My only complaint with those cars was that Toyota felt the need to place the starter UNDER the exhaust manifold, next to the block. So they cooked. The heat shields they put on often rusted away and fell off, and were not replaced, thus causing the starters to die over and over. A few of these cars I bought in need of a starter and a heat shield... and as I recall Toyota got more for the heat shield than they did the starter  .

That era is my favorite Corolla of all time. :) 1983s were the last ones, and they got the much better running OHC 4A-C engine and were quite lively to drive (in their day).

1981 Corolla had a 3TC engine I think. Funny but the Corolla replaced a 1973 VW Bug and that one had 163,000 miles with one rebuilt engine. Those Corollas did last forever; saw a lot of them on the road for a long time. What about the 1986-1988 Toyota trucks? I know a person that had 400,000 miles; original engine and clutch.

My '89 Toyota truck has 320k. But it is onits third chain, the weak spot of the 1982+ 22RE engine. The first one spontaneously exploded and blew the guide rail apart, jumped time, and punched holes in 2 pistons at only 160k miles. I just got done proactively replacing the [worn out] chain/guides/tensioner again at 312k when an exhaust valve burnt and I was doing a valve job anyways.

The Aisin 4-speed automatic is still 100% original, though.

My other '89 truck that I bought has only 169k miles, has already had its chain replaced previously, and it is wiped out again.

These stupid single-roller chains (the same design that VAG likes to use) are complete crap.

Getting back on TOPIC... The DSG Transmission failure of the Dual Mass Flywheel. I checked NHTSA which is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There are 13 reported documented failures at highway speeds. If you ask why these haven't been addressed in a more agressive manner, I can probably say that out of the 13 registered reports there was only one that indicated an injury. I called NHTSA and asked why they haven't addressed this problem and was transferred to three individuals N0NE had any more of an answer than a"" Community Organizer"" Pun intended. I read in some of the reported incidences that there was a recall of this failure in EUROPE, however I can not find the organization that caused VW to do the recall, if anyone has this information I would appreciate it and I will continue to investigate this defect. Thank you for any input, mine failed at 66,980 miles

Actually, if your engine is stuck at full throttle, and your brakes are on fire, and you are headed towards a brick wall, right about then you'd be wishing your Toyota's transmission WOULD die. :p

 Or you could just turn the ignition off, then downshift manually or just coast to a stop. Not to hard to figure out. But I bet when your caught up in the moment of "oh shi+, my car won't stop" this might slip your mind for a second or two.

I think you need to read more about the Toyota fiasco, as it apparently is not that simple.

But I do not know first hand, my Toyota seems to have a normal gas pedal, and it is 20 years old.

What exactly happened to your Jetta TDI at 66,890 miles?

What year was the car and what's the whole story?

Sorry for going of topic sometimes it's just more fun to talk about old Toyotas..

Yoda, my 06 DSG equipped Jetta is showing the classic DMF symptoms at the same mileage as your failure. Other then NHTSA, who have you called for help? Do you have the extended warranty? I have gotten no-where with the dealer and VW customer care.:(

TDICube No I haven't got the extended warranty. I have sent an e mail to all three top officials in VW America's customer service, I have received one letter back with no resolution as it states my warranty is up. I am continueing to investigate the failure and I am attempting to find out what foreign agency equivelant to the NHTSA in USA.. No one seems to know what agency that might be as yet. In the research I have done here are the following incident numbers of the failures that have been recorded through NHTSA 10195542,10201148,10247539,10273201,10276716,10279127,10279366,10250543,
10250937,10251874,10268994,10272888 and mine (13) total only mine indicate's an injury because of the failure. I am sure that there has been a great deal more failures, however very few people even know to report them to the NHTSA. And I can see why most people wouldn't report them to the NHTSA, really close to No help at all when questioning them on the phone. Give's me the impression there are a lot of folk's hired there by the governemnt that do not have a CLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone with any INFO that will help please provide me with more info. Thanks John

Oh gosh. My 2006 TDI with DSG has 38k on it and today i was pulling up to a stop light and it just CLUNKED really loud and jerked the whole car into 3rd gear i beleive. Then i stopped an was like oh crap what was that. I pulled up and BAM it clunks again into 3rd then the next stop light nothing. I am really confused. I am not super worried due to the fact im still under full warranty. I have noted noticable clunking between second and third before and only when it is REALLY cold it will clunk alittle between 2 and first decel.

The 3-to-2 clunk is pretty common. I'm not saying that makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside though. A lot of people seem to have this particular noise and from extensive reading I haven't seen a causal relationship between that noise and some kind of failure. Rattling on the other hand...

You won't be worried until it grenades at 60 mph on the freeway with that tractor trailer tailgating you

Good luck

Yea, I think you kind of missed the point. Have it checked out. If and I know it's a big if, what I said happens, you could end up seriously hurt. That's worth waiting for?

You remind me of a girl at the last shop I worked at.

LOF- you need new tires.
Next LOF- you need new tires

Pre-purchase inspection on used car- what happen, the old one was in really good condition- I lost control in the rain and totaled it.

You miss the point that you take a vehicle to the dealer that doesnt sound like its going to blow up in 10minutes they say...can not replicate as they have 3 times now for me!. Its under warranty so they dont fix it till they MUST....seriously man you are way underestimating me.
