going to check out a DSG 06 BRM as a potential first car for my daughter this weekend. seller claims it "just" needs a turbo & serpentine belt. might be getting close to 200k miles, unsure right now. with that kind of mileage, it's possible that the turbo just failed, but i have my doubts. i've done my research on these and i understand some of the common issues and i'm no dummy when it comes inspecting a vehicle in this state.

the car is available to me for a song and it is very tempting. i'm willing to dump some $$$ into the repairs, but obviously don't want to get burned. the car is so cheap that even if it needs a valve job, it could still be a worthwhile investment. i'm going to get a battery in it to at least power it up & verify mileage. i will NOT attempt to start it and may not even be able to do a compression test.

some starter questions:
how much should i expect to pay for a cam/rebuilt head from someone like franko6?
IF the DSG was properly serviced, how much life does it have left @ approx 200k?
do these cars also suffer from broken serpentine belt = possible TB damage?

thanks!

If there is a TDI guru near enough to you to work on it whenever it needs attention, which will be frequently, by all means have that person check it out for you. If there is no such person nearby and neither you nor your daughter plan on become a good VW mechanic, this is not the car for you. In answer to the other question, a broken serpentine belt will not normally damage anything else. A broken timing belt will damage a lot.

thanks, sptsailing. i appreciate your reply and words of caution. i may want to employ the services of a guru if it needs the head done, but anything short of that i can handle. i will be doing the inspection on the car and looking very closely at how much damage the blown turbo has done and at what potentially caused its failure.

unfortunately, it's kind of a friend-of-a-friend--get this car out of my backyard--situation and i won't be doing things like pulling the valve cover off until after i (potentially) buy it. this would be my first major repairs on a newer VW, but being "borninabus", i'm no stranger to turning wrenches.

Got my 06 Jetta TDI DSG when it had 123k miles. I'm pretty sure that it did not have a DSG service done before. Since then I have done the service myself every 40k miles and it still running strong at 298k miles.
You will need to keep an eye on the dual mass flywheel (common failure, $400 in parts alone), the suspension might need a refresh, how are the brakes and the cv booth covers? Repair costs can pile up fast...
A camshaft kit from Franko6 is $1,345:
I'm not sure about the rebuilt head.
When was the timing belt last replaced? That's another $200 in parts:

If the serpentine belt broke and I assume that is why it needs a new one, they rarely just snap like you cut it. Typically what happens is they turn into spaghetti like strands and can often get sucked under the timing belt cover winding around the crank shaft pulley and throwing the timing off, causing the valves to hit the pistons.

If you buy this I would figure on replacing the entire head, you may not have to, maybe just a cam but I would assume going in that it would need the whole head.

If you need the entire head call Franko6.

Needing a turbo, may be nothing more than a bad actuator or a leaky vacuum line.

if the timing belt is broken, then calling frank would be the plan.

good point on the mis-diagnosed failed turbo. i hadn't even thought about other causes.

so i was able go get a look at this car over the weekend and it's a go!
no horrific exploded turbo. just a loose shaft. i was happy to find out that it drove to where it is parked. it has about 40k on the timing belt that is 3 years old. overall, it's in great shape for a car with almost 200k on the clock, which to me says that it's been well cared for. so the unknowns are the cam & DSG.

am i correct in assuming that with the shifter layed out as such: PRNDS with the slappy shift over to the right that this car has the DSG trans?

obviously, i can get a look @ the cam once the car is in my possession.

just really stoked it turned out to not be as big of a mess as it could have been. if the stars align for me, i could be into this car for just about $2500 which is total insanity in today's market!

Do some research before buying a new turbo there’s a European spec turbo you can buy that gives you like 20% more horsepower.

so i now have the car in my possession. haven't had time to do anything other than put a battery charger on it and scan the codes and they are as follows. it was dead when i got it and was on the charger when i scanned it. i suspect that accounts for many of the voltage codes. i was told that the turbo is blown and that it needs a new A/C compressor. any insight from someone who takes a look at the codes is welcome.

mileage is a little higher than i expected, but still in the acceptable range. the serpentine belt is not broken and the timing belt still has 50K of life in it. hell, the tires are only two years old and have a bunch of life left! i'm in contact with XMan in regards to a PD140 turbo. nest on the list will be to get a look at the compressor wheel and cam to see what i'm in for, but overall am i very pleased with my purchase.

Get the battery fully charged or replaced, start it clear the codes and see what comes back. If the turbo is toast it may have dumped oil into the boost hoses, before you start it if you haven’t already, drain any oil from the lower hoses and intercooler.

thanks for the tip on oil in the lower pipes.
wouldn't want a runaway on the first start!

Fwiw I just installed a franko6 cam in my brother in law's brm. It cost about $1200 for the full kit and it didn't have any needed pieces missing. I was impressed with it.

so i dropped the car off @ my local guru with the following items in the passenger seat/floorboard:
xman hybrid PD140 turbo w/ oil feed & gasket kit
brand new VAG battery
a/c compressor i pulled out of a junkyard.

they have it running and controlling the neighborhood mosquito population as of yesterday. unfortunately, it's going to need a DMF. it seemed to shift well though--which is good. the cam is going to need to be changed when its TB time. plan as of now is to get it roadworthy--all fluids, DMF, A/C working--throw the DSG & appropriate tune for the xman on it and log some miles myself before turning it over to my daughter in july. it's also gonna need an aluminum skid plate and some suspension work that i can handle myself.

i can't really say enough good things about autobahn motorwerks here in PHX. they have been great to deal with and are super knowledgeable when it comes to all things TDI & VAG. they are only about a 15 minute drive for me, but if they were hours away it would still be worth it. highly recommend them to anyone in the area.

well...thought i'd better catch you all up since you've been waiting so patiently.
once the car was running, i was not happy with the fact that it was "rolling coal" on hard acceleration. upon further discussion with the guys @ autobahn, we decided to replace the cam. at this same time i stumbled across a classified ad here for a set of koni reds and a cam--all lightly used. scored them for $400 shipped! thanks brian!

new timing belt and cam installed and after working with malone on a custom stage 3 tune, this thing really gets up and goes! i set the torsion value @ -3.7 and that really woke it up. it is every bit as quick as my JSW, which is pretty awesome!

what is not so awesome is the oil consumption....it's been through an entire 5qt jug in just over 10k miles. it doesn't smoke when running, only a pretty healthy white cloud that clears right away on most starts. i'm going to give it the diesel purge straight up and then also some BG EPR oil treatment to see if i can free up anything that might be gummed up from sitting, but my hopes are not high. most likely, i am looking @ worn/broken rings or bad valve guide seals but i'll cross that bridge when i get there.
