I was told that an alternator clutch was seized SOLID on my 06 Jetta. This thing makes SO much noise while the car is in Park or Drive that im surprised its still working.

Is this a common issue and what clutch should I go with?

Thanks a lot fellas.

I am located in Canada so I will see if I can get the part locally. Is OEM the best route?

So all alternator pulleys come with the clutch built into it right?

You may be able to get the pulley locally (depending on where you live... Canada's a fairly big place, as I recall... perhaps you should narrow down your location a bit...), but I'm not sure you'll be able to find the tools... (again, if we knew where you were, perhaps someone local to you may have the tools already... of course, there's always the Snap-On truck...)

Yuri gave you the link to roseland technical and although in NovaScotia has the Metalnerd Tool line and this along with Mark4 and 5 parts and earlier avoids the cost of customs at the border. Anything heavy is usually shipped out of any of the local warehouses located across Canada. I just got a clutch kit, timing belt kit, etc. and zero shipping charge except for the bolts he sent from NS, just picked up at the local warehouse. He will answer your questions as well email or phone.

With the metalnerd tool, the pulley is easily changed with the alternator in the car.

This is SUCH an easy fix with the Metalnerd tool that you may be astonished. The alternator clutches are a known issue.

True statement. It just kills me that folks will replace their perfectly good OEM alternator that just needs a clutched pulleys for a bogus re-man from AutoBone.

Please folks, don't put garbage parts on your Dub.

OK- i bought the pulley and the tools off a MATCO Parts truck that comes to my dealership. Long story short, the tech that was installed the new pulley had a hard time and while removing the pulley broke the tool inside the pulley and while trying to remove the lost bit inside of it, he cracked the alternator casing.....now I need a new/used alternator.....new one runs 331 my cost (Bosch unit)

I found a used alt off a 2013 jetta tdi for 150 bucks....is this the exact same, will it work?

I have run into several of these (chuck is probably getting pretty sick of sending me replacement bits). Once that pulley gets seized onto the alternator shaft the only thing you can do is replace the whole thing, sadly.

It's best if locked up pulleys are detected sooner than later.

Very true statement. Sadly, many folks will drive a car with a mechanical problem until it refuses to drive and then fix it.

Of course almost any mechanical problem is cheaper and easier to fix if caught early before a failed part causes collateral damage.

Any tips or tricks to getting a stuck one off?
I've seen two things that worked:

One was to remove the alternator from the car and put it on the bench with the pulley on top... after removing the protective cap, put PB Blaster (or Kroil, or Liquid Wrench) in the center hub and let it soak in... hopefully that will help break the hub from the armature.

The other was to use an impact gun (making sure the bits are well seated...) - I know that the MetalNerd tools aren't rated for impact gun use, but... desperation sets in after a while...

Yuri

PS: it also doesn't hurt to make sure you're turning things the correct way... the hub is screwed onto the alternator shaft in a normal direction... it's not right-hand thread... often people hold the hub stationary and try to turn the center shaft, which in this case should be turned clockwise...

Thanks all and especially to MetalNerd. The dealership wanted to charge me $260 for the repair. I purchased from IPparts (the pulley and the MetalNerd tool) In less than 10 minutes the old removed and the new installed. Only needed a little leverage and the pulley loosened.

Alternator clutch pulley

I couldn't find the tool quick enough
When mine went bad so I removed the alternator
And use a zip cut grinder to cut it apart
Until the clutch was completely jammed up
Then used an air hammer GENTLY , pulley came
Off well . The whole job was done in an
Hour. Probly not the best way but !!!!
It's changed
