2004 Jetta TDI PD w/98,000 miles w/auto trans...got new tires and added new struts and alignment...everything went good for couple thousand miles and now a "shimmy" has started between 20-45 mph, sometimes it's really bad, had tires re-balanced and it's still there. "shimmy" is felt mostly in the seat & a little in the steering, noticed when it's at it's worse (37mph) and I let off the gas it stops, get back on the gas it begins again. Tires show no funny wear patterns. Whatcha think guys.

get under the front of yr pd and grab hold of your ball joints and give em a good shake, if they move or u see any rips in the rubber boots replace them. do u have stock steelies? if so, they may not ne perfectly round.

I was kinda leaning towards axle because it happens during acceleration, hey would you let me know what it is if you find out before me?

I do have the steel wheels, raised the front and rear and spun all 4 without hubcaps and used a WD-40 can w/staw just touching the outer lip and all seems to be straight and true, any other thoughts? What's odd is the tires aren't wearing funny. When in the air I did shake the wheel and didn't get any movement so I think bushing and tie rods may be ok.

I went thru this once and found a bad tire by rotating fronts to rear. Unusual for new tires, but not unknown.

Rotate fr to rr and see if it helps. Out of round tire are actually very common.

Got a quick ? why does it seem ppl are trouble shotting a suspension area when " I let off the gas it stops, get back on the gas it begins again. " Deals more with the drive-train IMHO. Sorry Can't help more then an observation

You aren't right here. These cars are super sensitive to tires. Having delt with this more than a few times I say start with the tire issue. It's the culprit 90% of the time.
