had to replace the turbo on my '03 Golf. after replacement the car idled normally for about ten minutes rived fine. on test drive 100 yards up the street no power then the car started bellowing white smoke and over revving and stopped after 20-30 seconds. engine stopped would not start again.
engine turns over but won't start,
any ideas????

there are many things to check but #1 most likely is bent rods from that much oil ingested. either way you are taking the glow plugs out to get the oil out of the bowls so it could at least try and start. oil filled bowles will not let the car start so take them out and do a compression test after you sucked the oil out and then turned it over to clean it out.
2nd is to check the timing physically. put it all to TDC and check the alinment of the IP, Cam, and Flywheel. its possible to skip a tooth or more when that much violence stops the engine. if those 2 things check out then put the plugs back in and try again. Cross your fingers... there are more items to check but these are the 2 fastest most critical things to check. past this, pulling the valve cover and looking at the lifters for spider cracks.

What happened to the first turbo?
You didn’t pull the lower boost pipe to drain oout any accumulated oil did you?
If you didn’t…..that’s what caused your runaway.
Do as Mongler suggests….. but a compression test will tell you the story .
Usually cylinders#2 and #3 will be bent.

Where did you source the replacement turbo from??
Did you clean out all the charged air tubes and intercooler after the turbo replacement?? It's possible that the old turbo wasn't making enough boost and/or passing a lot of oil into the intercooler and pipes. Now with boost you moved all the oil accumulated into the engine.
If compression test checks out ok then clean all piping/IC before running again.

I had a runaway once but no engine damage, thanks to manual tranny and good brakes!
The way to avoid this problem again is to drain the oil out of the exhaust recirculation cooler at each oil change.
Drill a hole to accommodate a short 1/4-inch WOOD screw, at the lowest point in the cooler body. The screw is the drain plug. I use a leather washer made from a heavy glove or similar as a gasket. It needs to be a "soft" gasket. If you can find a screw with a washer as part of the head, it's even better.
A high mileage engine will send a lot of oil around the recirc plumbing and this is a good way to avoid a problem.
I learned this about8 years ago...on this forum. I think there is a you-tube video about it, too.
