I can't seem to figure out what battery for a 02 New Beetle TDI, a group 48 or a group 94R?

It seems like the 94R has the right power and similar size to the 48. Most of the catalogs list the 48 for all TDI's, but a lot of threads here indicate the 94R is the one to get for the additional AH to power the glow plugs.

The OEM battery cracked the case around the neg terminal.

My understanding is that you can't squeeze a 94R into a Beetle, so you'll have to use the group 48 - which IS the specified battery for a TDI Beetle.

According to my book the specs are listed on the battery housing. That would seem to indicate that more than one size might have been used.

The beetle only uses the 48. The other will not fit. period. 3" to big.

Duralast 48-L. Mission accomplished.

What a frikkin' pain in the arse. I swear, the Beetle is the hardest car on earth to work on. One of these days, I'm going to need to go after the snow screen.

Thanks to this guy's web page, I didn't have a big problem, other than dropping the hold down bolt and fishing it out with a magnet.

Had to re-code the radio. Fortunately, the "remove and hide this radio security code" card was still in the owner's manual. :D

ANY work in the Beetle engine compartment begins with "LOOSEN FRONT OF BELLY PAN". Thereby, most crap that you drop will either roll out in front of the hanging belly pan or be easily retrieved by hand. Yes, an additional step. Less anger and swearing - priceless!

I am using a KIRKLAND size 41 battery from COSCO (650 CCA, 800 at 0 degrees Celsius) for the whopping price of $ 59 Canadian.
The insulating blanket is a tight fit - but I managed to wiggle it over the battery and the thing fits into the tight space of the Beetle.

Kirkland batteries are made by Johnson Controls (same as SEARS DieHard etc.).

Forget nthe snow screen, they are 40x's the size of the G/J and I've never seen one clogged.

My car likes to "eat/hide" parts that get away from me - that's why I usually let someone who knows what he is doing work on my car...

The air intake in the NB is above the wheel on the driver's side. I examined mine at a GTG this summer and found a blade of grass. Nothing really can get into the snow screen of the NB. Also useful for judging how deep in water you can take an NB. The air intake is pretty high up.
