Ok, check engine light is on scan get 00293 code, the gear slector screen is outlining the digits in black on the dash, the trans would not work properly, it would shift funny and slip a bit.

I checked the connectio - good, so I replaced the Trans Multi-function Switch, cleared codes and all is good, shifts fine and doesn't slip.

A week or so later the engine light comes back on and the gear slector screen outlines in black, re-scan same code. Check connection - good. Clear codes everything goes back to normal and works?

Now not sure what to do?

This is on a 2001 Golf TDI with an Auto

You need to observe TCM measuring blocks group 001.

Shift through the gear positions from P to 1.
Display field should show the changes.
Display field 4 is eight binary positions. Pay attention to 5-8.
5 = 1 when R, N, D 3, 2
5 = 0 when P, 1
6 = 1 when P, R, 2, 1
6 = 0 when N, D, 3

If not, then you need to adjust the selector cable.

7 = 1 when P, R, N, D
7 = 0 when 3, 2, 1
8 = 1 when P, R, N
8 = 0 when D, 3, 2, 1

If not, then you need to do the electrical tests associated with the Multi-function switch.

Hi MOGOLF

Hi,

I read your post on checking the binary bits on the multifunction switch using VAG Com. I'm checking them because I'm getting a multifunction switch error code and my display is going into reverse video. It works fine in Park, Reverse, and Nuetral, but everytime i shift into D it goes into reverse video. Anywho, I checked the binary bits and they are the exact opposite of what you posted. Ideas??

Jay, I looked at a different spec, and you are right. I fixed the post above.

Check the condition of the connector on the switch. Look for water inside it, corrosion on terminals, etc. The switch is at the top, back of the transmission.

I still have this problem??
I don't know your trans but my 2014 JSW is a DSG automatic.
I had the fluid and filter changed and it doesn't start with a slight jerk any more and seems to shift better.
Have you ever serviced the trans?
All the fluids in a car have a service interval.
