Really do need VCDS to check your timing and all sensors are working correctly. White ish smoke and a lazy engine are common to a very retarded injection timing.

There is a safety switch in the shifter which will only allow the starter to engage in P or N.

Did you tune it with the 3 bar map taken into account?
