It's not really a snow screen but it's meant for big bugs and stuff. Cut the screen out and keep decent paper air filter in the box. No performance gains at all and it'll last 100,000 miles.
Really do need VCDS to check your timing and all sensors are working correctly. White ish smoke and a lazy engine are common to a very retarded injection timing.
