2002 New Beetle TDI and critter damage

Well, it was the speed sensor, but the sensor was fine, so all I needed was a replacement harness. A few crimps, some shrink tubing, and all was well: More pictures:

    ALH Vacuum Pump Oil leak

I just did this on my 2002 New Beetle - There are 2 seals, and one fits great, but the other is a simple circle that doesn't really fit the groove. This one kept popping out of the groove, and I could imagine that if you weren't careful, you could end up pinching the seal while installing it...

2002 New Beetle TDI and critter damage

Update: i took a better picture, and I believe this part may be the G22 speed sensor as shown here: https://www.idparts.com/vehicle-speed-sensor-g22-automatic-357919149b-p-2961.html Does that look right?

    Anyone running 100% bio-diesel?

Chevron is selling "renewable diesel" at the pump in a few locations in San Diego: https://www.chevronwithtechron.com/renewable_diesel/ Anyone know what this actually is? It sounds like it's B99 from their description: What is Chevron Renewable Diesel? Chevron Renewable Diesel is a...

2002 New Beetle TDI and critter damage

I sold my 2002 New Beetle years ago, but now it's come back into my life for some help, after sitting for most of the year due to COVID. * Issue 1: limp mode and/or poor boost, brakes get hard if you press one stop (but recover in a few seconds). Suspecting vaccum leak. Confirmed one...

P0672 and P0773 at same time

I recently had the Timing belt, tensioners and water pump repaired at the dealer. Drove about 100 miles no problem. Last night, starting it up, drove it about 100 yards and then got CEL with P0773 and P0672. The P0672 I've seen before, it comes and goes and I probably need to clean the...

2002 New Beetle - Dead Alternator (?) but no Warning Light?

Also : the alternator I removed was a Bosch 90 amp. I thought all the TDIs had 120 amp alternators. This is a 2002 New Beetle. The new one is a 120 amp.

2002 New Beetle - Dead Alternator (?) but no Warning Light?

Success Update: got a rebuild alternator from Autozone, put in in following these instructions : http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=195438&highlight=alternator and http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=267691 Definitely a hard job, but made much easier with the great instructions...

Could my alternator pulley have flown off?

PCar: what was the price and/or part number on your new hitatchi alternator from autozone? My alternator is kaput and wanted to fix it asap, and have heard bad things about remanufactured ones from FLAPS.

2002 New Beetle - Dead Alternator (?) but no Warning Light?

More info: I did check the fuseblock on top of the battery, and all connections look good and tight. Also, the symptoms I have (a little voltage after starting that goes away within 30 seconds) sounds exactly like the symptoms this guy was having...

2002 New Beetle - Dead Alternator (?) but no Warning Light?

Last week, my 2002 New Beetle TDI would not crank when I tried to start it. Checked voltage on starting battery: 11.5V. "must have left the lights on". Charged the battery back up using a hiqh quality battery charger, and all was good. Or so I thought. A few days later, on a trip 100...

    Overboost Problem

There's "full vagcom" which you get with purchasing a cable. There's a "VCDS Lite" which you can use with a third-party cable (this is supported by Ross-Tech and they explicitely allow this). VCDS Lite has an unpaid mode and a paid mode ($100). In the unpaid mode it's quite limited -- you...

    "Italian Tuneup" and B100

mohawk: i'll try that. So far, it seems like the auto tranny wants to downshift before hitting redline, even if I've got it floored (or maybe the torque converter is locking up? not sure) but it seems like I'm not doing well at hitting anything over 4k consistently. But mostly been driving...

    Overboost Problem

Also: i discovered that the free version of vagcom doesn't do the pretty graphs. However it will still do data logging, so you can save the data to a .csv file and graph it in the program of your choice. That's how I made my graph. I really should reward the fine people at Ross-tech with a...

    "Italian Tuneup" and B100

Conan: thanks for a responsive and on-topic answer :) Were you hitting 4800 to 5000 running Biodiesel or just regular dino? I have any automatic, so I find that with the combination of not being able to control the shifts, and when running b100 the severe lack of power at high rpms, i'm...

    "Italian Tuneup" and B100

I've been running B100 for years, and recently had my turbo actuators get stuck, leading to overboost. Fixed it using the EasyOff method (details: http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?p=3249963 ). One recommendation I see is to "drive the snot out of it" after cleaning, e.g. the old...

Chemical cleaning for turbo vs removal?

I just had success with the Easy-Off method on my 2002 Beetle. Like others, I had to do the cleaning twice before it worked. The first time I did it, it appeared as if the VNT actuator was getting a full range of movement, but I still had overboost. The second time I finally saw the actuator...

    Overboost Problem

Update: I did another Easy-off treatment, and this time I actually saw the actuator stick, and then release as I finally gave it enough of the chemicals. I was able to drive the car for 10+ miles without running into limp mode :) Of interest, here's a graph of the boost after the cleaning: It...

    Overboost Problem

(from memory) It's Block 01 (Engine), Group 11 -- this shows throttle position, MAP requested, MAP actual, and one other value.

    Overboost Problem

More info: I swapped the N75 valve with the other one, sprayed both with WD40 for good measure, and repeated the test drive. What I'm seeing is pretty consistent: At WOT, the MAP specified is about 1900 - the MAP actual jumps up to 2500, but then after a second or two creeps back to 2100-2200...

    Overboost Problem

Thanks seatman, I'll try that. One more bit of info: thinking back on when this has happened, every time it's been when the car is very warm. The first time was when driving up & down steep hills, the second time was on the freeway 10 miles from home, and the third was again after 10 miles...

    Overboost Problem

More info: measuring the VAC line of the n75 with engine running gives a steady 28in vacuum. Measuring the output line of the n75 gives about 16 inches, but if i rev the engine in neutral the output seems to jump around a lot as the rpm changes. Not sure what's normal for that.

    Overboost Problem

2002 Beetle TDI with the ALH engine. Stock, and only 66k miles. Been running Biodiesel for last 30k miles. About 3 months ago, car went into limp mode once with P0234 code (16618 overboost) cleared it and it didn't come back until this week. Now, it's chronically overboosting: watching it...
