Just wanted to give an update. My B5 AFN swap has been running flawlessly for the last 100k miles. I had to replace the fan because it was missing a blade. Other than that it’s been awesome. 300k on this engine and she’s still trucking along.
I second that to talk to Frans, he sold me my complete conversion and he is very knowledgeable. I used an O1E from a V6 TDI because it had a taller 6th gear. It works great with a tune that can power the car. The AFN is a VE motor. In my opinion it is more reliable and does not require a lift...
Your B5 is most likely not a can bus wiring system and your gauges and things are gonna be a challenge to do with an AWX/AVF. The AFN is more of what you would want to use, as it came in the A4 overseas and is not can bus. The AFN even shares the same block as the 1.8T.
I'm trying to source some parts for some upcoming maintenance. Where is the best place can I source OEM parts overseas? I need a fan idler pulley, and all the coolant hoses on the car for example.
Thanks.
I did a 2000 B5 S4 swap to an AFN TDI. It was pretty easy, kept the quattro drive and just changed the 01E 6 spd to a TDI geared 01E. 41 mpg on the hwy at 80 mph. All the parts came from Frans.
I can agree with the OP's comments on VW's poor reliability and such. I have owned many water cooled VW's and Audi's. The only reason I own them is because they are a blast to drive and I know how to work on them. Have they let me down? Yep. Been left on the side of the road more than once. Have...
The two piece driveshaft was made for crash testing approval from what i recall. It's supposed to break away at the hanger instead of coming through the floor in a crash. It should have no effect on vibe issues in my opinion.
From the pic that looks like it's going into the radiator, should be fine. Some Vag cars have them on the lower radiator hose as well. Jap cars often put them near the thermostat housing. There are many places you can put it and it will still function fine.
Easier? I'm sure it probably would be. But considering an A3 TDI alone would probably run you 15-20k, plus the added cost of the Quattro parts, I don't see that as a comparison at all. Not to mention the A3 is a common rail TDI and is subject to recall, we don't know what the fix will be for...
You would be better off just selling your B5.5 gasser and buying a B5.5 TDI, unless you could find a really cheap BHW powertrain from a B5.5, which isn't likely. ALH swap is possible, anything is possible, it just takes time and money.
Does your rear end have any aftermarket poly bushings? Or snub mount? The super stiff black ones can cause quite a vibe issue. Have you checked to make sure the exhaust isn't touching the frame? It could be flexing the mounts enough that it could be touching only under load. Just a thought.
For your time and effort it would be more feasible to import an entire swap from a B6 in europe. Frans is the man to do it for you.
If you don`t want to go that route you should be looking at a BHW swap, as it is already longitudinal and will require less fabrication.
The 01E trans can take...
That's pretty sweet. I'm running just one S4 SMIC on mine, with a BV43 turbo and R520 nozzles it still does the job. If it was on the track or I was pushing full out for a long time it wouldn't be enough though.
I've never done that kind of swap but i'd imagine it would fit. It's the VAG lego system. Stuff fits in all models from all similar year builds, worst case you have to fab up a bracket or two for the engine mounts. That shouldn't stop you from doing the swap if you're dedicated to it. It's all...
25K miles on the swap now and I couldn't be happier. I sold all my gasser parts and paid for the cost of the swap about a year ago. Sounds crazy but it's true. I had an issue with the R520 nozzle upgrade, it was way too smokey. I had to send my nozzles out to another shop to find out my local...
