I now have a 5 minute commute to work and my wife wants to share my car and refuses to drive stick so I am selling my 96 Passat as I bought a new (used) 05 Passat automatic gasser. I am listing my beloved TDI here for a while first before venturing over to EBay or Autotrader. Here are the...
Figured it out
Figured it out. Ugh. One of the clear plastic fuel lines somehow got nicked and was dribbling fuel. I don't know how I didn't see this (post traumatic stress syndrome from being honked at several times) or how the heck it happened in the first place.
I'm guessing that special...
I restarted er up and saw a small number of larger bubbles in the fuel line. Is there anything I can do other than tighten the clamps on the fuel lines to purge the air? I had replaced them all with worm drive clamps.
I'm in the middle of a tank of fuel, about 1/2 full and it's been 2 weeks...
 B4 Passat with 175k miles. I ran a whole can of Purge through last night using the methods outlined here (I disconnected the fuel lines and ran through an old salsa jar). I have been doing this once per year for the last 2 years (this was my third shot). No probs in the past...
Good catch on the retaining screws! Before I tear the original cluster out, the cluster I have does have the screws on the front and my original TDI does not. Are they in any way interchangable or am I screwed on the tach and speedo dial as a result? -T
Can't find MFA connector online??
Wow, I'm surprised no one has a hint for me on the last message from the other week. Let me know if anyone can lend a hand on that connector. One MFA cluster - waiting to get a goin'! Thanks! Todd
Can't find MFA connector online??
I can't find the 1HO-953-634 MFA connector online anywhere at World Impex, 1st VW Parts, etc in their search engines and can find most of the other parts. Is there a revised part number or does anyone have a spare to part with? I have most of the materials...
Here's how I fixed mine - with photos
Happily driving along I push in my clutch pedal and it goes to the floor and stays there. Yikes! Long story short, the small welded "box" on the side of the clutch pedal broke its weld and the master cylinder piston and fun white clip everyone is talking...
Fixed it - for future endeavors....
I got the idea off of another thread:
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=168288&highlight=door+handle
and added an (approx) one inch long piece of 1/4" (90% confident on that size) fuel line onto the white plastic "hammer" that pushes down on the...
EBay for new door handle??
Ok, to fix my problem above I priced a new German door handle for the driver's side at $100+ at World Impex and found one on EBay at...
Yes!!! Thank You!!!
FIXED ONE PROBLEM, CREATED ANOTHER......
Ok, I finally got out tonight and followed James' directions by opening the back door and sneaking out that screw. BTW - it is reverse threaded like all the other components are. I got it out, popped the handle, and got the door...
James - thanks for the detailed workup! At this point, I wouldn't overlook shooting the lock off, hehe. I have been laid up with bad flu today and going to give this a shot tomorrow night after work. I'll get back with the results. Thanks again! -Todd '96 B4 Sedan 160k miles
Mine is stuck too
What exactly did you shoot and how? I unfortunately don't have a gun.
My passenger front door is also now unlockable/unopenable from inside and out. I have scoured the threads here and not seen a successful response from anyone in the front door (back door seem easier...
Thanks for the replies. The replacement procedure sounds reasonable. I have lots more questions though:
Should I go with the stock size injectors (184um) or larger ones mentioned about (205um)? Aren't there light smoking problems with the larger ones? Is fuel economy also lower with the...
Is there a way to confirm the spray is messed up? I have smoking on cold start (and it runs a little rought for ~5 seconds) and heavy smoke under hard acceleration. It's a 96 B4 with 155k miles and original injectors. $200 is a significant investment. Will the larger nozzles hurt fuel...
Changing the fuel filter cleared the code!?
I was also receiving this fault code. I changed out the fuel filter which was about 1.5 years old and had 15000 miles on it. I had ran some B100 and B20 in that timeframe (now I run B10 cause its all I can get). Viola!!! Changed fuel filter, code...
I just wanted to mention that I followed twob4s five steps to the letter and viola - no chirps - the flock of birds is gone!! I replaced the crankshaft pulley with the new part number 028 105 243T. A few observations:
1. Tools: you need a T25 torx screwdriver and 10mm socket to remove the...
Which fabric brand and color though???
I have the same problem on my 96 Passat and want to do this. I read up on some past threads and think I understand how to do it (it looks like a pain) but want to order a fabric color that most closely matches the stock so I don't have to redo the...
I was looking to take the GLX / VR6 Passat alloy rims and mount em on a 96 TDI. I liked their stock look on the Passat. the alloys have a 5 hole pattern and the TDIs the 4 hole. Somebody said something about hub centric? It sounds like a royal pain to otherwise tear apart the tdi guts and...
Well thanks for the advice. I'd better set my sights on the more realistic MFA conversion instead ;-). Anyone want to buy 4 GLX rims? Don't jump on it or I'll be suspicious. -T
I picked up some alloy rims from a 97 Passat GLX for a very very good price. They're the 5 bolt pattern. I'd like to mount them on my 96 Passat TDI - it has the 4 bolt pattern hubs!
I did some searching on the forums and most of the posts suggest against doing this - ranging from high...
My compressor was "short cycling" last summer and through some posts here, I added 1 can of R134a and replaced my fan relay last July/August 2005 and had GREAT A/C for a 4-6 weeks then it quit out of no where. Now, I'm trying to to get the A/C fixed quickly with the Chicagoland temps rising...
Try this:

I bought this 6 months ago for my 96 Passat's headlights. It made a good improvement, but don't expect a total miracle.
