update: the clutch had fallen off my compressor. too bad it's so hard to find just the clutch. i saw a replacement kit online but needed it today because it's so hot here in So Cal. Have to replace whole compressor.

p.s. the transmission doesn't stick or slip. the only thing that i notice is that when it goes into 4th (around 43-45 mph), the car vibrates. i've driven lots of manual trans, and when my jetta does this, it feels the way a manual trans feels when it goes into 3rd or 4th without enough speed...
