Higher gear not always better MPG

I don't quite understand what you mean. I have said mostly two things, one is what the factory installed gear change indicator told me when I tried a bluemotion Passat. Have you ever tried a VW bluemotin with a gear change indicator? The other thing is that I refuse to believe a standard or...

Higher gear not always better MPG

Something has to be wrong with your engine or your scangauge. It is simply impossible that a correctly tuned engine would have lower BSFC at 3000rpm part load compared to 2000rpm high load. It simply doesn't compute  As others also says the best specific fuel consumption is around the...

Higher gear not always better MPG

What rpm are you running in 4th/5th? Any visible smoke in 5th?

Higher gear not always better MPG

RabbitGT, all I was doing was report what the factory installed gear change indicator told me to do. Bluemotion models have this as standard and basically it tells you to change to a higher gear as soon as you revs above 1500 rpm and it dont tell you to change to a lower gear befor the rpm drops...

    Most Efficient RPM

dieseltwitch, maybe this chart can help you. I think it is for a 90hp version. http://i684.photobucket.com/albums/vv206/SteinarNo/Various/engine_map.jpg As you see the lowest spesific fuel consumption is at almost full throttle at about 1700 rpm. However the power of the engine at that point...

    Calculating Rolling HP

I had to do some tests. Approximate car weight 1600 kg. Tests done with my Passat wagon. Initial speed 110 kmh, final speed 100 kmh, time 7 sec, gives 25 hp for a indicated speed of 105 kmh. Initial speed 90 kmh, final speed 80 kmh, time 9 sec, gives 15.8 hp for an indicated speed of 85 kmh...

    Calculating Rolling HP

Brilliant formula Brilliant formula dieseltwitch :) I had the same idea myself some time ago but I didn't try to find the constant which is the only number you really have to figure out. The rest is basic physics. Here is another variant of the formula, this time for us europeans who think in...

800+ on a tank, whos with me.

820 miles, 53.5 mpg My longest run is 820 miles on 58 liters of diesel. That is 4.4l/100km or 53.5 mpg. Achieved last summer in my Passat wagon 1.9tdi 4-motion, manual 5-speed. Very careful driving, not above 53 mph, coasting in neutral down reasonably hills and in gear at steep hills. Almost...

Higher gear not always better MPG

I had a test drive of a new Passat Bluemotion some time ago. Among other things Bluemotion models has a gear change indicator telling you when to shift up and down. It basically told to shift up at around 1500 to 1600 rpm at flat road and to shift down at 1000 to 1300 rpm depending on engine...
