Since having the 23O6 update in May of 2015 my hand calculated fuel mileage for the same 10 month calendar period (before and after the update) is 0.3...

The portion of the article about VW leaving the US mass market was what concerned me, not the comparison to Toyota. I did not even pay attention to that part as I was still in shock from the headline.
I did my own extensive comparison shopping and chose the Golf TDI over other options...

Great news.
It may have just been that the "Fuel Meter Valve" on the HPFP was malfunctioning occasionally and the VW recommended fix for that issue was to replace the entire HPFP.

Imagine if you sold a common rail TDI on Craigslist and later on the HPFP failed.
After finding out how much it cost to repair, if the buyer happened to be a nutcase they might come after you for revenge.
