I daily my 1997 Jetta AHU here in the Canadian climate (-22C here today) .. Other than rust issues, and typical wear and tear items these are great little cars to drive. use Synthetic oil as mentioned and typical age stuff will need replacement (Injection pump seals, timing belt, etc.) With good...
I was under the hood replacing the injection pump head seal.
I recently replace the coolant hose underneath the pump with a OEM VW part hoping to get by a little longer until I had time to fix the leak. Well I can now say this from experience.. Diesel will rot a brand new hose to failure point...
Hello all, it has been a while now.
The car is still running great, I was under the hood this past weekend fixing leaks..
I had the valve cover off and here is what the cam now looks like after putting around 48,000 km or 28,000 miles on the car.
The rattle noise could very easily be caused by the shock absorber that is part of the serpentine tensioner assembly. I had to replace mine as it made a annoying rattle. If you have a bad alternator pulley clutch you will cause the shock to get beat up faster than normal. Grab alternator pulley...
What color smoke? Black / white / blue ?
Possible air intake system problem..? (Mass airflow, boost sensor, can monitor using computer).
I would unhook the mass airflow sensor and see if it makes the situation better, if so maybe clean / replace it.
My car had a clogged snow screen at the...
Well the injector pump leak has caused the coolant hose below to go mushy and leak all of my coolant out onto the road.
Just caught it before bad things happened. That needs doing before more fuel fun.
Just a quick update..
I removed the #3 & #4 injector lines on Saturday night and came back to look on Sunday and they had both drained the fuel from the top. I am not sure but maybe this is draining out the spill line ? unless others know the fuel should stay there.
Abacus: I have a sonic...

I recently have been battling a battery drain issue for a couple years off and on with one of my Volvo's. We put new battery in, disconnected any aftermarket stuff completely.. It would start a couple days later but the car could never last a week sitting. Scratching heads and...
I didn't put more fuel in as of yet, I may just remove it and see if the nozzle has evidence of fuel on it. I have done some reading and would like to change the nozzles or clean them. This car sat for 10 years and always smells like a charcoal babeque when running and people that follow say the...
Good afternoon.
On the weekend I was trying to replace the head seal on my IP in my 97 Jetta. When I removed the lines from the injectors all had visible diesel sitting flush with the top almost however injector #4 had no residual diesel sitting up top... Odd
The car runs fine still and gets...
Just my $.02 ..
I believe that the Green coolant is not as nice on plastic components as the G12 originally specified. Stuff like thermostat housings and tee fittings in the cooling system may not last as long with the green stuff. For what its worth to go with G12 or Dexcool these days, I...
If I were you, I would jack up each wheel and give the wheel bearings a check to see if there is any play in them. They can have a little play and not make horrible noises. A little play will go a long way in making the car feel odd.

Hello everyone,
The car is now safety inspected and emissions tested!
Now for the bucking problem.. I need to fix the 12v outlet on the dash so I can run my PC logging data.. The fuse is good but the lighter doesnt get hot. In fact it has never been warmed by the looks of it so maybe it never...
Injection pump bolts are tight.. I will look into problem in more detail once I get it back from the garage today. It is waiting to get the safety inspection completed.. She got a nice set of air horns yesterday as the stock ones had rusted so they dont work any more. After the inspection today...
Glad to hear the mystery is solved, and even better that you will be back on the road soon. Even though you spend a bunch of money, it is satisfying when all of your hard work is rattling down the road again.
Cheers!

Good morning.
I dont believe the car is chipped as the old guy I bought it from was the original owner and not into modifications. I will have to ensure the pump is tight.. I never thought of rattle causing this. I will have a look tonight when I get home.
