Check the shift mechanism above the trans (adjacent to battery). A quick test might be to disconnect the linkage, set the levers to neutral and then test the rolling again. If a lever has slipped off, it can be in two gears at the same time.

Bulb update; most of the bulbs mentioned in earlier posts are listed as 6 volt bulbs. I found Sylvania 14 volt, 1.1 watt bulbs in 2-pack, #73-LL (longlife), at O'Reilly.

My 99 MkIV is doing the high idle thing also. Already replaced the CTS (the one in the upper hose), but problem continues. Sometimes the idle has a definite 1-second thump to it, like one cylinder has an injector leak.

The blue VW loctite will loosen up with heat. While removing the trans mount bolts, I had two of the long bolts turn into playdoh, and snap off. To get the threaded sections out, I used a plumber's torch (use butane, not MAP gas.) The heat turns the blue loctite into gel and they come out...

I have maybe 100k miles on a wett chip, with no issues. However now that California is smog testing TDI's, it's a potential issue.

A trivia question for Wett chip owners. Does the tower / bridge belong on the 695 chip (outboard) or the 694 chip (inboard)? thanks in advance.

Bump. I also need to replace a stud. It appears that the stud is part of the turbo assy, not available as a line item part. the thread is M8 x 1.25 = never mind. I found them at IDPARTS.com
