Exactly my thought. I have a 2 year old and a 5 month old. Imagine how fun it would have been if they were with me when my turbo blew. Not just beside the road, but riding home with both of them in a tow truck after a couple hours beside the road. Would not have been fun.
Too true. I'm sure if you built the world's most reliable car, you would still have the odd one that was a lemon. Having said that, it really does seem like these cars are suffering a statistically significant number of turbo failures, which, honestly, is worrying.
You have a great point. If there's a weak part (Turbo or otherwise), MUCH better to have it go bad under warranty than gently saving it until post warranty.
If the weak part is endemic to the fleet of cars, having said part go bad and be repaired under warranty just helps get the point across...
Kilometers on car at failure: 40,000 (approx 26,000 miles)
Build date: Unknown (2012 model)
Corrective actions from dealership:Replacing Turbo.
Outside air temps at failure: + 2 C
Failure warning signs, if any: Glow plug light flashing no power
Warning lights on dash/MFI: Glow plug light...
Yeah, sounds pretty familiar.
It's official, the turbo let go in a pretty catastrophic way. My wife is hyper-annoyed, she's not exactly a fan of VW right now. Her opinion is a car shouldn't suffer a catastrophic failure this early in it's life.
Can't say I disagree with her.
It's official, the turbo ate itself. The dealer has already ordered a replacement but wants to keep investigating whether any of it has been ingested by the engine.
Not ideal. My wife is hyper-angry, she's afraid a fixed car will has a chance of blowing again, and if it ever did outside of...
Last night I ended up stranded on a 6 lane highway about 75km (50-ish miles) from home. I posted the symptoms here and someone pointed me to this thread. Really happy they did, it makes me pretty convinced that my Turbo blew last night.

Yeah, it's sitting at the dealer now. Have to wait till they get a chance to look at it tomorrow though. In the meantime, I like to try and learn as much as I can so I'm not too surprised by what the dealer ultimately tells me.
Not going to lie, I'm really hoping it was a turbo failure. I got to thinking about it, and the car ran fine for nearly 100 km (60 miles) after the new tank of diesel. The tank was near empty (range: 35km) when I filled it, so one would think if it was bad fuel, it would have happened sooner.
You're right, I don't want to know, but I'm not feeling good about this. Yes, I have a record of filling up there, but nothing that says it was diesel, just that I paid $xx.xx at Such and Such a station.
Not going to lie, I feel absolutely sick about this.
That's what I was afraid of. I paid at the pump, never bothered to get the receipt. Might have to go to the store and see if there's any way of getting a receipt after the fact.
Assuming bad fuel, how bad might the damage be?
First, I'm a TDI newbie, so bear with me.
I'm trying to get an idea of what went wrong with my car tonight before the dealership starts looking at it Monday morning;
- This afternoon, filled it up on a Native Reserve with Diesel. Been filling up on the reserve for a year now without issue...
Yeah, I could see the appeal of some upgraded speakers too. Haven't tried the bluetooth audio but I have plugged in my iPod and navigating it on that radio is frustrating. What you say about the bluetooth though not displaying the song name, the Sirius Sat radio did the same, just displayed...
Just browsing over it a bit more, it looks like they (you?) replaced a radio that didn't have Sat. The one I have does, so is it just a matter of taking the trim off, unscrewing and unplugging the current head unit and sliding in the "new" RCD510?
Thanks for that, that's exactly what I'm looking for. Looks a little involved though with having to take off that much trim. When I have a bit more time I'll read through that thread a bit more to see what exactly you did.
So, are the ones on vwvortex new or used, and does it matter (I...
Hi.
First, to introduce myself, I'm a first-time VW Owner, first time Diesel owner, and the proud new owner of a 2012 VW Passat TDI. Took delivery of it last Friday and so far I'm really enjoying it. We bought the comfortline after going to the dealership to look at a Jetta but liking the...
