    Attn: ATLANTA TDI Members

I like Bavarian Imports on Howell Mill Road in Atlanta. They're really more of a BMW shop, but they did a good job on my TDI. Of course, I'd still go to a guru for engine-related stuff.

    Transmission removal -- it's stuck!

What little plate are you talking about?

    Transmission removal -- it's stuck!

The thing is, it's not. You can see in this pic http://pics.tdiclub.com/showfull.php?photo=99548 (it's dark, but visible) that there's plenty of space between the CV boot and the engine; the issue is that the bolt hole on the block closest to the diff is caught against the diff flange. And I'll...

    Transmission removal -- it's stuck!

I've been following this howto: http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/a4/transmission-removal-mk4.htm and have removed everything like I'm supposed to except for the passenger side axle (because one of the bolts attaching it to the transmission stripped). However, the axle itself doesn't appear to...

    Transmission removal -- it's stuck!

The engine is supported by chains hung from a harbor freight engine support bar, so moving it up and down is no problem. I've tried doing that already though, and it doesn't seem to help. I've also tried pushing it (and even levering it with a pry bar) towards the front of the car, to no avail...

    Transmission removal -- it's stuck!

I'm trying to replace my transmission, and I've gotten it about halfway out of the car, but the differential flanges are wedged between the subframe and the engine. Any suggestions? pictures here

What locking compund to use on inner tie rods?

That's red loctite; I'm talking about blue loctite. My purpose would be to prevent the tie rod end from rusting onto the shaft; if there's a better thing to use to accomplish that, I'd love to hear it. I'm trying to make it easier for the next mechanic, not harder!

What locking compund to use on inner tie rods?

You think so? The main reason I used the Loctite wasn't so much to hold it on, but rather because I wanted to keep the damn thing from rusting together and I knew better than to use grease... Speaking of which, what are y'all's thoughts on loctite for the tie rod ends?

What locking compund to use on inner tie rods?

I know I'm reviving an old thread, but my question is on-topic, so... The consensus here seems to be that thread locker is not necessary on the inner tie rod. But is it harmful? Or, in other words, if I've already installed a new tie rod using blue thread locker, should I go to the trouble of...

Shorter springs; do I need a spacer?

Should I be worried about using the Shine springs for autocross (where I might be doing three-wheeled turns)?

Shorter springs; do I need a spacer?

I'm in the middle of replacing my existing springs (probably OEM, but they don't have any paint dots...?) with Shine ones, along with swapping out all the other parts of the suspension. The Shine front springs are about an inch shorter than my existing ones. My existing strut assembly did not...

Anybody have an 8mm triple square bit I can borrow?

I'm planning to attempt to replace my transmission tomorrow, and the HOWTO says I need an 8mm triple square (12 point) bit. Does anybody near Atlanta have one I can borrow? (I would also ideally like to borrow a transmission jack and engine support bar, but I can buy those from Harbor Freight...

    advice for buying shop/home compressor?

I'm thinking of taking the plunge to air tools. Could y'all give me advice about what compressor to get? I want to be able to run at least a framing nailer or an impact wrench, but maybe also a sander, grinder or spray gun. I only need to run one tool at a time, and don't mind waiting for the...

    Fiat/Ram Cargo Van spotted

Why are all these euro-style vans so goddamn ugly (yes, even the Sprinter)? They're all too tall and narrow and have weird bulbous front-ends. Why can't we have something lower, wider, and more cab-over?

So you like big diesel engines?

I was under the impression that ocean-going ships didn't have to meet emission specs (hence the statistics about how one ship pollutes more than X million cars)? What I don't understand about these huge engines is the combustion characteristics. In the little engines we have, the idea is that...
