I know the HF tester isn't known for accuracy and it should be viewed to check for "reliability" or sameness across the four cylinders, but with "normal" being in the 500psi range.....I might find another tester and check that out.
My HF tester reads in the 485-505 range for all the cars I've...
Anyone ever used those mounting posts with an aftermarket (e.g. Atlas) skid plate? I got a pair of those in a box o' stuff that I bought off a guy; also have skid plate sans mounting hardware.
Just because a couple people have asked: A couple days shy of three weeks since I took that spark to the left eye (the one that's always been at least one line better than the right on the eye chart), and 16 days since getting it removed and starting the antibiotic eye drops.
For at least the...
Was very pleased in removing the lower control arms to do the rear bushings (which were torn up), that neither of the captive bolts inside the subframe came loose.
Was less than pleased when one of them came loose at maybe 50Nm when re-installing. 🤬
Told this story before here, but I bought a car once with a brand new timing belt. But then I thought...who sells a car immediately after doing a ~$1000 TB replacement.
Answer: someone whose timing belt broke and they just did a quick/dirty replacement.
So, I took the cam off, saw cracks on...
Most likely a wheel bearing.
With both front wheels in the air, put the car into gear so the wheels are turning and then (carefully - no loose clothing, etc.) touch the spring on each side of the car. One will probably feel like there's more buzz/vibration to it than the other - that's your bad...
Wait - what? You get to the cabin filter from INSIDE the car...?!
I thought/assumed New Beetle was same as the Golf/Jetta - wipers, ECU, cabin filter, TCU, etc. all accessed at the base of the windshield under the plastic plenum chamber cover....?
Or did they do some weird config with that...
Spray some WD40 Specialist Rust Penetrant (that stuff legit works!) on the sleeve (non-head end of the bolt) to help it move a little more easily, too.
Getting those sleeves nudged back a bit is the key to getting the alt (and A/C compressor for that matter) out easily. I've gotten them out just...
I was assuming they were referencing @boertje's 6sp (applicable to any auto-to-manual) swap .pdf.
Located in boertje's signature.

Tried those in our garage - thought they worked until I started having oil dripping down from the storage shelf (they'd chewed into an oil jug).
Brought out the heavy artillery in the form of those green bait blocks and that seems to have kept them at bay for the last few years (the bait blocks...
That's a nice-looking car - price seems entirely reasonable, too.
Have you put it on FB Marketplace? As much as I loathe FB, that's where the people tend to be. 🫤
Yeah - I keep toying with the idea of one of those, too. Thing is, I probably don't know I need to use it on a particular bolt until it's too late.
But those transmission mount bolts....while I've never broken one (yet🤞), the fight they put up coming out definitely would make them a "must use".
Yeah - inside the subframe are the threaded bolt "holes" (there's a metal....something(?) that I called the "receptacle" above) which, given sufficient corrosion and failed drilling attempts, can be pushed up out of the way). But it wants to fall back into that position to accept the dogbone...
