Windows not rolling down - can the switch contacts be cleaned?

    That's what I thought too.

Windows not rolling down - can the switch contacts be cleaned?

They do. A guy can remove the assembly and *carefully* pry apart & remove the individual switches, to get to the innards. I've done that. You almost need to heat them up with a hair dryer in order to spread the plastic apart enough to remove the switches (w/o breaking the tabs off). There's...

Any recommendations for service in Madison, WI?

Old thread, but maybe it'll help some others. I've had Jason do a couple timing belts and few other things on my '02 over the past 16 or so yrs. I remember seeing cars from N Chicago suburbs and visited with an owner who drove down from Wausau, WI to have him do work on his car, if that tells...

MKIV Front Door; Removing Upper Hinge Inner Bolt *Without* Dash Removal

...Foam on the HVAC blend doors (I assume). Is that what usually blows out the vents?

MKIV Front Door; Removing Upper Hinge Inner Bolt *Without* Dash Removal

Out of curiosity, how difficult is it to remove the dash? Any tutorial someone has seen lately? The foam in my HVAC has rotted :cautious:

MKIV Front Door; Removing Upper Hinge Inner Bolt *Without* Dash Removal

Thanks. That's good to know. I didn't realize it was going to be that much of a production to change the hinges! I'm going to buy new door hinges for my driver's door here any day here. I'm sure I could fix the old ones, but screw-it! Part of "Operation: Revive Ole Blue" project.

What are "normal" acceleration practices with ALH cars?

Naaah. I have other vehicles to drive for more fun. I rent electric cars quite often on business trips. Get my spirited-acceleration-fix on those ...w/o needing to actually buy one (y) I was pretty much never a maniac driver anyway. Seen too many cars wrapped around phone poles or on their...

    01M Woes

Sorry to hear that. My condolances. That sucks! Yeah, give it a go. Sounds like you have the skills to tackle it. It sounds like you do. Let us know how it goes. Hey, I had a Fox body Mustang back in the day. They were neat cars. Nothing special. I bought it for $25, needed a head gasket and...

What are "normal" acceleration practices with ALH cars?

The Jetta does pretty well with 90hp and a turbo. Doesn't sound like much, but for a DD seems to work for such a car. Kind of a dog, but still good for general driving...and getting 250k miles, usually pretty trouble-free. I drive plenty of pickups which advertise 3 or 4x more HP, which...

    01M Woes

What's stopping you from rebuilding your 'old' tranny you took out? (or buy one 'cheap' which needs a rebuild?). The knowledge resources are out there. The kits are less than $150 for a seal/clutch kit, or $500 for a Deluxe kit. You seem to have the skills. Seems with all the time you spent, or...

What are "normal" acceleration practices with ALH cars?

I'm sure a lot of owners like to kick in the turbo a lot. Then they promptly come back and bit@h about how weak the transmissions are! :ROFLMAO:

    01M Woes

IDK for sure it's the TC. Just a thought. There could be multiple things going on. The 01M in my car was newly rebuilt by the previous owners ...who dumped it right after putting $2500 into the tranny. I have all the receipts. It was rebuilt by the best VW tranny guy in Minneapolis. I called...

    01M Woes

You've probably searched a bunch of posts online. There's a lot on slipping at high gear... Here is one of many (different solutions) I saw: https://www.vwvortex.com/threads/01m-4-speed-automatic-shifting-problems-and-resolution.3398082/

Windows not rolling down - can the switch contacts be cleaned?

They probably can. Take it out, heat the plastic up with a hair dryer and pop it off. But honestly its probably got a lot of wear to it. I had a broken switch and my assembly was half-worn-out anyway. I tried cleaning it. Looked ok inside, but still didn't work very well. So...on the advice of...

    01M Woes

Look in to the TCC. Any new product can fail. The fact the trans works when it's cold...and not when it's warm...what's the difference: The TCC is calling to be locked-up but can't. It's slipping. Or the solenoid (or downstream component) that diverts oil to it (or a signal) ...isn't doing to...

    01M Woes

First of all, you're sure the fluid level is right ...right? Overfull can cause foaming and foam doesn't compress. If it were foaming at high speed b/c it's being thrown around in there ...who knows?? Just asking. Worth a double-check ..but I'm assuming you've double-checked that already...

    Manual Windows. :(

Whoops! Wasn't trying to be snarky. I re-read what you wrote and thought I deleted my post ...and not posted. Guess it did. (Sorry). I'll go back and delete it. I get what you are saying ....after I re-read things. (don't have any advice for manual windows)

    Alternator/Pulley Lifespan?

If you remove the alt, you should be able to peer inside or pull off the black plastic cover and see if the commutator is goofed up. If it's good, not heavily grooved, You could buy the parts and rebuild it yourself. They aren't that expensive or difficult to do. Pretty sure the diode kit and...

    Alternator/Pulley Lifespan?

Tough call. Sometimes it pays to shop local. Autozone has limited lifetime warranty, which means, as I understand it, they "can" refuse warranty after a few years. BUT ....that said, they warranted the alternator I bought from them 2 times over the last 12 years. Meaning, I'm on the 3r one...
