Recent item on my 05 was the map wires were rubbing threw. It would kinda go in and out for a bit. Didn't put a light on the dash but my scan gauge II would read and clear the code when it could be cleared. Wires were bad about 2 inches from the MAP sensor on 2 of the 3 wires.

If is currently is the timing belt out of time the cam position sensor will flag it preventing starting and a code on vcds. Good idea to check the timing but if it ran before I don't think this is the issue.
If you have vcds you may want to activate the in tank fuel pump to reprime the system some. The lower 2 allen bolts aren't the most fun to remove and install due to the coolant hose.
I would honestly try the valve cover gasket first and while in there inspect your came .
I have now done a couple bew heads like what oil hammer has said on golf/jetta. I have managed to just leave the turbo oil feed on the turbo and gently twist things around to get it out.

So I am getting .035, .034, .037, .035 for piston protrusion. Other then the carbon on the piston had the 4 exhaust valves and one intake valve - there is no other marking once I wiped the pistons clean.
Can I just replace the valves (and the cam/lifters)?
I find the timesert stronger for the aluminum. Used in my duramax diesel head for a manifold bolt. Helicoil is like a spring vs the timesert is like a double threaded pipe (in and outside).
I have a magnetic based dial indicator and checking tonight the piston protrusion.
I guess the biggest question is- can just just swap out the valves that made some contact without having to do anything to the valve seats or guides?

Update and questions. Looks like the exhaust valves have kissed the pistons and I see a mark for the intake on the transmission side piston as well. Didn't imprint but did make a mark in the carbon on the piston.

The cam lobe has a chamfer on them. At the peak of the lobe when the chamfer is worn off and it has a sharp edge - then the lifters tend to look like this as well. Time for cam and lifters. Some also look into the oil pump as any of the hardened metal has to go threw the pump before catching in...
