    ECU ressurected!

Old thread, I know, but hoping someone here might know the source of my problem. Recently, my 2004 TDI (BEW) had 2 simultaneous problems: 1) Digital read of mileage zeroed out (was about 256k). Continues to correctly accrue miles now, but started over from zero (ie, never reverted to 256k)...

    Which heater core

A couple years ago, had heater core replaced. Used a Febi. Already leaking again :(:(:(:( Should have gone OEM, or Valeo. Don't skimp on this - the labor is extreme.

Odomoeter zeroed out & cruise not working

The battery tests fine, but suppose it could be a grounding issue - no other symptoms other than zeroing of odometer & no CC though. I did get a Vag-Com (official Ross-tech version - tired of the cheap Ebay ones that only work a couple times). I checked all of the CC settings - everything...

    Replacing PD Camshaft Position Sensor

Just got VCDS and Ross-tech cable, checked codes, 19463. Haven't had any issues starting or running - except the cruise control doesn't work (Green light goes on on the dash, but doesn't actually engage). Would a bad camshaft sensor prevent cruise control from working?

Odomoeter zeroed out & cruise not working

Any chance its a bad ECU? No other symptoms I can find. Speedometer & tach both work fine.

Odomoeter zeroed out & cruise not working

Just recently, my odometer went to zero (was around 256k miles). It works - counts...I now have a 2004 PD with 206 miles... Simultaneously, the cruise control now doesn't function. The green light comes on, but it doesn't actually engage (I normally use CC a lot, so do know how to turn it...

Has anyone installed the new clutch switch (6Q0927189)?

PS - link to install: http://workshop-manuals.com/volkswagen/up/power_transmission/5-speed_manual_gearbox_0cf/clutch_control/clutch_operation/removing_and_installing_clutch_pedal_switch/

Has anyone installed the new clutch switch (6Q0927189)?

I read multiple threads about this switch replacement - then replaced switch (even though I was still a bit fuzzy on procedure, as there are so many variations out there). Wish I had read your post first. It works - no rev flare yet, but haven't gotten up to full speeds/5th gear - so not sure...

Volkswagen's Clean Air Act violations on 2009+ TDIs spark huge recall, investigations

Always amazed me American pickups are nearly all gas (except for the larger ones). In almost all other markets, pickups are universally diesel. As for the future of diesel passenger cars, a couple key factors: 1) Its really in the hands of Europe. The US really just rides Europe's...

Volkswagen's Clean Air Act violations on 2009+ TDIs spark huge recall, investigations

I'm with oilhammer on this. VW will take a hit, but its not going away. Even if things get much worse than everyone expects, the German government will come to its aid. VW will survive. Probably won't remain #1, but will survive. Diesel passenger cars, however, may have numbered days.

Flickering Dash Lights and Head Lights 2004 Jetta BEW PD

I'd take a close look at the timing belt & timing belt tensioner.

Four more carmakers join diesel emissions row

Yeah, that's the thing - NOx is a big problem in Europe, due to a combination of high numbers of diesel cars (around 50%, versus U.S. around 1%), and dense cities. Most of the US is spared - due to low levels of diesel cars and generally less dense living conditions. Don't worry about the EPA...

Oil leak at exhaust manifold studs?

Never managed to figure it out.... Removing EGR/intake would give the needed view - let me know if you figure this out, would love to know.

Video: 2004 Jetta BEW PD. Stumbling / pulsing when idling

With the BEW, there's no adjusting the timing with VCDS. Timing is physically adjusted, by rotating the camshaft forward/backwards. There are some threads with detailed explanations of the process. I had a similar stumbling - can't remember if I had the code. However, it turned out the...

    When to shift/downshift

Others already made the point, but keeping it in gear down to 650 is way low. Not sure about other models, but on the MKIV BEW, the idle RPM is about 800. So, decelerating in gear, no fuel-pedal, the engine will start to kick in fuel at 800 RPM - there is no benefit to staying in gear at that...

Volkswagen's Clean Air Act violations on 2009+ TDIs spark huge recall, investigations

The real bummer: If the Consumer Reports test is accurate (dubious), then the performance & fuel efficiency won't suffer much with all the required reprogramming & retrofitting. So this begs the question: why did VW cheat? The only reason would be the cost savings - reportedly around...

Glass headlight lenses - install Q?

Just replaced the plastic lenses on my BEW with glass lenses. I had the plastic lenses refinished about a year ago - they looked brand new - but after less than a year they are yellowing again. Doesn't help that I live in the valley of the sun. The glass lenses look oh so much better. And...

If I had to get the recall done, I would go over it with a fine-tooth comb after the fact.

Volkswagen's Clean Air Act violations on 2009+ TDIs spark huge recall, investigations

Gonna have to backup Oilhammer with my own anecdotal experience on this one. I bought a used BEW. After a while, blam, car sounded funny - everything pointed to the turbo. Turns out - it was the cracked turbo-to-EGR cooler pipe. In researching, I found the car had been through the EGR cooler...

Volkswagen's Clean Air Act violations on 2009+ TDIs spark huge recall, investigations

Your impression is correct: the worst of the polluting happens under heavy load. FWIW - I think you are referring to my comment - it was just an extreme scenario - none of the diesels could pass the regulations, in real-world driving - but I doubt the EPA will be that strict. I would guess...
