I assume you are referring to the box which has a slotted grill for air to flow in just above the grill. When you remove the top cover you can see that the back face is open to allow air to enter from the engine compartment.
There may be a slight downside to having the kit installed. From reading other posts it may not be 100% effective. Also, when the flap actuates to bypass part of the intercooler, engine efficiency may be affected. Some people are complaining about decreased gas mileage at lower temperatures when...
Removing the EGR valve and throttle valve are part of this write up.

I think you may have something there with the EGR behavior. Soon after I had my icing start up problem, I threw a code relating to a sticking EGR valve. We cleaned the throttle valve and the EGR valve. Since then I have not had any icing problems. I am guessing that with these two valves...
I am not sure there is any foolproof solution. For now I am trying to use the covers that IDparts sells for the front grill. I will also drain the passenger side intercooler hose occasionally when I suspect I may have ingested water/ice.
I would think that there would be a mileage loss with the new kit installed at temperatures below 10 degrees C (50 degrees F) since the intercooler is not working at full capacity/efficiency at the lower temperatures when the flap moves to bypass most of the intercooler. I have the same...
Thanks interesting, I did not realize that the airbox was open in the rear. I wonder why people bother to take the box off completely to get engine compartment air when all you have to do is tape up the front.
While removing the top cover on the driver side today, I noticed that the engine air intake inlet is somewhat blocked by fabric of the top cover. Apparently it is not a problem since no one is complaining, but it does seem to block the flow somewhat. I am wondering if it would be a good idea to...
Most likely it is intercooler icing. Removing the pan, disconnecting the intercooler hose on the passenger side and draining the water will most likely solve the problem assuming that all the ice has melted by now. The problem is that if you or your trusted mechanic drain the water and the VW...
"My engine started once, stalled a second later, turned over slightly on the second start attempt, and hydrolocked on the third start attempt."
After reading many of these posts on this forum, my understanding is that the starter is not strong enough to bend a rod. Therefore if the hydrolock...
I agree with VeeDubTDi, I think it is criminal that the Dealer did not know about the Icing issue and kept trying to start the car with the danger that he could be damaging the engine. Being a dealer that far south, he probably never experienced the problem before.
PoweredbyTDI, I think you have summed it up fairly well. Thanks for the input. At what outside temperature do you start getting nervous about overheating and start removing covers?
These are the conditions I will use to install/remove the front covers on my 2010 JSW. If you have any suggestions or reasons to modify the limits please be free to comment. Also can anyone think of a reason to only install the top covers without the bottom cover?
I may be wrong but I don't think that the engine is cooled that much from cold air coming into the engine compartment. You have the radiator, air conditioner condenser and intercooler blocking the flow and it is sealed on the sides and on top and below. There may be some improvement in warmup...
After playing around for an hour, I finally was able to paste the table in the posting however it came in so small that I could not read it. There was no way to increase the size.
