I went aftermarket on mine. Kenwood touch screen unit. To make the steering wheel controls work, I had to install a separate piece of hardware and it was all a huge PITA. However, it's worked fine for like 2 years now and I'm happy I did it.
MKVI Wagen
I have the '10 wagen, 6 speed, sunroof, TDI. LOVE the car. Way more refined than my old ALH was. I will say that I miss the fuel economy of my old ALH 5 speed! It was 46.5mpg no matter how I drove it. My newer car is lucky to get 40mpg, and fuel economy is WAY more dependent on...
Pretty good price. I'd go for it. The DSG will probably do right around 40mpg on mostly highway driving (that's about what mine got). No big problems now that the VW recall fixed the TDI issues...so if yours has been "fixed", it'll have an extended warranty that covers all the big stuff...
You're correct about emissions in Oklahoma. No testing at all. And no reason to keep the EGR, other than removing may void the extended warranty from the emissions fix? Not sure about that...
So, removing the EGR hops up the power and fuel economy a lot? I haven't looked into doing that.
Got my Malone Stage 2 installed. Seems nice, but looks like my fuel economy is down by 2-3mpg after the emissions fix. Boo!
Got my wife's JSW emissions fix done also.
Had mine done last week. Immediately drove to California (1500 miles into my trip now) and haven't noticed any difference at all. No more noise, power seems the same. Can't comment on fuel economy since I've been pulling a camper on this trip (24mpg).
Did mine last week, then drove 1200 miles to Vegas. Have noticed zero difference. No more noise, fuel economy seems to be the same, etc. Got a Malone Stage 2 tune on the way.
Nice! I've always loved the MKIV ALH. I had a 99.5, 5 speed. Drove it to 292k miles and it was still going strong when I sold it. Now the INTERIOR was falling apart... haha... but the motor and tranny (and ORIGINAL clutch!) were all going strong. That car might still be on the road, who knows?
Well, it's up to each person, obviously, to decide what their definition of "DIY" is. But I would imagine that the really serious issues are of the minority. Most of them are leaks or whatever. Silly junk that can be fixed at home.
If I'm not mistaken, the payout is also partially based on your mileage, so the longer you wait, the more miles would go on it... I don't know how that's calculated though.
My JSW is at the dealer now, getting the emissions fix. I'm excited to have this out of the way. Been a long time...
Literally use my pano sunroof every day it's not raining. Even when it's 100 degrees in Tulsa, the sunroof is open and both drivers side windows are down. Just feels right to me. When I was shopping for my car, the pano was a MUST have because I just love a sunroof. Wouldn't have bought a car...
Thanks for the word. I'm scheduled for Thursday morning. So, tomorrow night I'll go back to stock tune, get fix Thursday. Send off "new" stock tune to Kerma, hopefully be running the newly modified tune by Friday.
You know, this conversation ended pretty amicably until you chimed in.
Did I argue with someone? Did I keep other customers "with money in fist" from purchasing? Good lord.
