Looking a little closer after letting it run some more, the movement seem almost nil. It may have just been when I first started it and the pulley bearing was getting settled.
I think the alternator pulley change did the trick.
I may have a very slight movement on the HB just because the...
So I installed the freewheeling alternator pulley from FCP. The bouncing is diminished considerably but it still bounces about 1/4".
I looked and I seem to have the newer Harmonic balancer, though it has about 80,000 miles on it and is about 8 years old. Not sure if that could still be an...
Looking at the photos, I think I have the one on the right which has the large nut inside.
I ordered an alternator pulley from FCP which is only 10 minutes away from me and hope to install it tomorrow.
I replaced the harmonic balancer a couple years ago as I did have the startup squeal. I...
Thanks guys, now that you mention it, I do remember hearing about the clutch pulley.
So it looks like I just need to find one and it looks like I need a special tool to remove it.
I have a 96 Passat TDI and I've noticed for a while that my serpentine tensioner pulley has been vibrating a lot. Especially after a cold start with some squeaking, then after a bit it settles down a little, but still bounces which I am uncomfortable with.
I changed out the tensioner pulley...
Super, thanks! I'll give them a call. I also spoke with Metro fuel injection near Hartford and they gave a reasonable quote to pop test and adjust the injectors. About $20/each.
I'm in Trumbull, CT near Bridgeport and looking for a place to rebuild and or pop test and balance injectors.
I have over 100,000 miles on a set of Bosio Sprint .520's on my 97 Passat and the car has been smoking a lot for quite a while.
So I'm looking to replace the nozzles and have them pop...
I'm not running a tune. Just the nozzles.
My timing shows dead on, but I could increase it a little anyway. I know I tend to run my 96 above the blue line normally and it runs fine.
I thought that the 32768 was as low as I could go without the hammer mod. I'll have to read up on that and...
I pulled out the VAGCOM and took some IQ readings. This is what I found.
No faults on Vagcom
IQ info:
4.8 mg
1.660 v
93.6 C
32768 (which is the highest I can set giving the lowest fuel qty I believe)
Timing is dead on.
Fuel temp 167
Timing 38
So maybe I have an injector(s) problem?
Open to...
Thanks for the responses.
I do have a VAGCOM to perform some checks.
I'll take a look at the wiring to MAF just in case.
As far as oil consumption, I would not say it's high. It seems pretty normal. Maybe slightly more than my 96.
As for the injectors, I was also thinking of taking them in...
I have a 97 Passat that has been belching black smoke for several years, but has plenty of power. Currently it has about 295,000 miles. In fact more than my 96 Passat that doesn't belch black smoke. And my 96 has over 300,000 miles. Both cars I've always run Titan synthetic oil 5W-40.
When the...
So today I pulled the fuel sender pickup out of the tank and inspected it. It was pretty clean. Just a little dirt on the bottom. I removed the one way valve and blew some air through it. Then blew out the fuel line with air. And then used the mityvac to refill the fuel line.
I still got...
Thanks for the posting and the link. I did check it out and it's definately something I need to look at.
I don't seem to have a loss of power, but the bubbles in the return like are like foam. Very fine.
Since I put a new battery in the car it starts right up. But I still don't like the...
I've since crawled all around it and followed the lines with my black light looking for dye. I also took a halon detector and followed the lines and checked around the compressor.
But I still can't find any leaks.
Since I added freon, it does get nice and cold. So unless the compressor is...
I looked under the car tonight with the black light and I couldn't get all the way to the evaporator drain without jacking it up. But I did look at the water puddle and the area where the water would be dripping and no sign of dye.
I also looked around the compressor pulley as best I could and...
I checked and it showed 27/125 psi. Low/High.
So I added 17oz of 134a and it settled at 30/170 psi low/high. And the temp dropped by 22 F inside.
So now I'm wondering if I have a hidden leak somewhere. I have dye in the system and looking with my blacklight I can't find any sign of leakage...
I think I may have a blockage on my a/c system.
I don't seem to have any leaks and the compressor is working just fine. But both the low and high side lines are just warm. But on the other side of the expansion valve it's cold and wet.
I'm thinking the expansion valve may be blocked?
Is...
Interesting. I replaced my Mann filter with a new Mann filter. But hard to imagine that a new filter would be bad. And Mann is usually good quality stuff. I've used some of the same filters on my other Passat without any issues.
Since then I put in a new battery in the car and it starts...
So I got the trans out and the flywheel is actually in decent shape. It's only down to 7.5 mm and the new one is 9.1 mm. No visible damage to the flywheel or the clutch assembly.
But it seems that the rear main seal has a slow leak which must have been getting on the disk. It was definitely...
