MKIV Jetta stiff brake pedal and brakes dragging/smells

OK. I have more info. The brake pedal not returning fully is more prominent with softer brake. So if I press hard on the pedal, it does bounce back fully. If I press softly, ie. just slowing down the car, not actually braking to stop in an urgent/stop n go traffic, then I notice brake not...

MKIV Jetta stiff brake pedal and brakes dragging/smells

Which switch did you have? ie. what color was it? Black, purple or grey? What did you mean by push down hard on the pedal? During install? I know for the older switch with adjustable plunger you're supposed to *pull* hard on the pedal, not push.. I did re-seat it over the weekend...

MKIV Jetta stiff brake pedal and brakes dragging/smells

One more thing to note: Despite the stiff pedal/brakes, I was able to easily stop. Actually the brakes become really sensitive when the pedal is stiff, so this is very different from what most people think as the MC problem where the brakes would be very stiff and they lose all braking power and...

MKIV Jetta stiff brake pedal and brakes dragging/smells

BTW, the stiff pedal symptoms not only occur when the car is off. Sometimes (I assume after a long period the pedal is slightly pressed by not returning completely) in stop/go traffic the pedal gets stiff as well. It varies, and I haven't been able to determine a pattern to it. I think when you...

MKIV Jetta stiff brake pedal and brakes dragging/smells

Thanks. I've looked at all 4 brakes and no unusual wear. They are definitely not burning except for that one time when I noticed I had no power and at the end of that short trip I smelled something burning. From there I started noticing this symptom. I haven't yet raised the vehicle and turn...

MKIV Jetta stiff brake pedal and brakes dragging/smells

More info re: stiff brake pedal Well, it's not really a malfunctioning BLS. It's more like whoever installed the BLS didn't do it right so that it pushes against the pedal preventing it from retracting fully. I'm mostly basing this on the overwhelming # of occurrence of this similar symptoms...

MKIV Jetta stiff brake pedal and brakes dragging/smells

OK. After more reading, it looks like this might be due to brake light switch? Is this a very common thing? How many people are affected by the new switch install problem?

MKIV Jetta stiff brake pedal and brakes dragging/smells

All, I've seen many many posts about MKIV brake problems, but most of them are about the pedal sinking in or suddenly braking on its own, not bouncing back up to normal, etc. such as these: http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=302604 http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=306361 My...

Intermittent Glow Plug MIL Solution Found!!!

Back from the dead... where to squeeze? Bringing this back from the dead... Finally I have to pay my GP harness due also. I am wondering how many mm or inches from the tip of the plastic/rubber housing is this "bottom" location you are talking about? When I looked inside the harness...

    California Diesel Smog Test Frequency?

Are you serious? Actual emission test is going away? OK, so anyone else experience what I have experience? It's been 2 yrs since my last smog, but the new registration DOES NOT require smog. Anyone???

    California Diesel Smog Test Frequency?

Apparently not, if you read my original post. Mine was last done in 2011. I am due for registration now, no smog certification required. I even checked online and I could just pay if I wanted to. I am looking for others who have similar experience. Maybe CA DMV (or CARB?) changes their minds...

    California Diesel Smog Test Frequency?

Yes, that 2 yr period counting from last registration is kinda weird, don't you think? But then again, it simplifies a lot of logic from getting really bogged down with the details when calculating dues for smog, so it probably is more economical for CA DMV... Anyway, I thought about the...

    California Diesel Smog Test Frequency?

Well, as mentioned in my original posting, I had to do this already in 2011, so I'd be very surprised if they haven't implemented this fully yet, at least for my car... I was hoping someone would say "Yeah, they changed the law and realizes that diesel smog is a joke".. but I guess that's just...

    California Diesel Smog Test Frequency?

I have a TDI that was smogged for the first time when I renew back in early 2011. By California DMV rule, AFAIK, diesel needs to be smogged every other year just like gasser (and worse, it doesn't exempt from 6 yr new car exemption), but today I received the renewal notice, and guess what? No...

    California Diesel Smog Test Frequency?

Not sure if this belongs in this forum, but I can't find a better place to post this, unless there's a regional thread for different states that I'm not aware of.. I have a TDI that was smogged for the first time when I renew back in early 2011. By California DMV rule, AFAIK, diesel needs to be...

FS: 2003 Jetta Wagon, manual, 133k miles, new turbo and timing belt, traction $12500

I see... I didn't see that note earlier. Is this ebay item confirmed to be the OP's auction? I agree in any case it's just strange, and not very practical/intuitive on the new ebay listing. Why not update the photos in the original listing..
